I’ve meant to watch this for quite some time, because it’s An Important Picture, and I can see why: the story is far more realistic than contemporaneous films. The adult characters are seen to be mean, short-sighted, and generally easily fooled or overcome.

The young people seem to have the right attitude by today’s standards: enjoy youth while you are young! Still, you feel sad for the young hero, as his future is far from rosy, and getting away from his home life is the only option that’s logical.

Very highly recommended; especially with an eye to its time.

This seems apt to watch given today’s developments in the Middle East, as it seems the world is being thrust into another stupid, pointless, unnecessary, probably illegal armed conflict.

In the following posts, there will be a quote from the very end of this Oscar® winning documentary which will seem, sadly, an evergreen statement.

Very highly recommended.

@giantspecks Are there certain prerequisites for a #movie to be included in the #CriterionCollection?

Just seems like they are mostly foreign, artsy off-beat &/or obscure in one way or another but there are a lot of what I would consider "great" movies on the list & I have more than a few of them in my #DVD collection:

films.criterionchannel.com/

The Criterion CollectionThe Criterion Channel - All FilmsExplore more than 1,500 films on the Criterion Channel, with filters for genre, decade, country, and director.

What are four non-Criterion movies you'd add to the Criterion Collection?

Casino Royale (1968)
Frank Capra/Bell Labs 1950s educational films (Our Mr. Sun, Hemo the Magnificent, etc.)
Truly Madly Deeply (1990)
The Farmer’s Wife (1998 Frontline documentary)

(Most of my picks aren't currently available in HD at all.)

The #CriterionCollection closet is such a bad design for organizing and finding discs. And from the video-viewer’s perspective, we can’t really see anything but a bunch of densely-packed shelves of thin containers with the movie titles printed in tiny font on the edge. Hard to imagine a worse #design, kinda means the celebrity in the closet is guaranteed to overlook many titles. And has a celebrity ever stooped down to the lowest shelves to look there? #fail

Partly a series of essays on films and their influence on other filmmakers, partly an homage to movies in general, this is an hypnotic consideration of symbolism and symbioses in cinema.

For anyone who loves films or storytelling — no matter your view on either “The Wizard of Oz” or any of the films by David Lynch — this is very highly recommended.

#CriterionCollection (sorry, not subtitles available)

i think the language here is Russian, so i hope Russian speakers enjoy the film. If I have time to find other languages, I'll boost it☮️

It's based on the real life story of #SolomonPerel who suppresses his Jewish heritage to avoid being murdered during the Shoah.

The #filmmaker is the same filmmaker of the new film #GreenBorder (see #DemocracyNow about the new film)
