The ease of use wasn’t enough. These people wanted to communicate with those over distances they couldn’t personally bridge by foot or car, which is where the national providers ate the lunch of the BBS “version 2.0”.

From a personal perspective I wanted nothing to do with these new GUIs and mouse driven interaction. The 80x25 terminal was its own aesthetic and style. Take the BBS into 320x240 and swap in TrueType fonts and the whole experience is just lost.

Outside local small business customers looking to run support / employee sites, I’m not sure who they thought were going to take up these new interfaces and departures.
