Ancient golden #silk revived from the Korean sea
#SeaSilk—often referred to as the “golden fiber of the sea”—was one of the most prized materials in the ancient #Roman period, used exclusively by figures of high authority such as emperors and popes. This precious fiber is made from the #byssus threads secreted by #PinnaNobilis, a large #clam native to the #Mediterranean,

the 「knives」are made by polishing the exterior border of a #clam shell.
fishhooks are very scarce (3 for all the early kaizuka)
the containers 「kettles」are very common.
and of course, ornaments ! shell bracelets, composite shell bracelets, beads, bits of shells that are just carved and polished and we don't know for sure why (i like those ones)
fun fact, north in jomon japan, people imitate okinawan shell bracelets in pottery.

In today's edition of I am an easily amused man: Scallops served in scallop shells from Ox and Finch in Glasgow. Pretty much everything at this restaurant, including the contents of this clam bra, was delicious. It seems like this place is gunning for (and should receive!) a Michelin star. Glasgow is seriously underrated in my opinion. I don't think there was a single thing I ate there that I didn't completely love. England wishes it could say the same 🤭😏

New discoveries: three tiny species added to #SouthAfrica’s spectacular marine life theconversation.com/new-discov

"...there are 3 finds that have been particularly exciting – a 'walking #sponge', a tiny #clam and a rare and miniature #isopod... Long-term efforts to identify #NewSpecies like these guide effective conservation. They help to ensure that critical habitats are protected."

New clam species discovered in South Africa's #kelp forest phys.org/news/2024-07-clam-spe paper: zookeys.pensoft.net/article/12

This small #clam, which is only 2 mm in length, spends its life crawling between the spines of #SeaUrchins. The #NewSpecies has so far only been found in one locality in #FalseBay, #SouthAfrica, where it was found attached to the burrowing #SeaUrchin Spatagobrissus mirabilis in coarse gravel at a depth of about 3 m. It has not been observed free-living, without the host urchin.

I took my brother and friends to #Netarts #Bay, #Oregon for some butter #clamming yesterday evening, the three clammers (two just learned) among us got our limits of 20 each! it took a long time for me to clean my limit 😵 butter #clams are great in the #shell seasoned with garlic salt and butter on a grill or in an oven, and this #clam in particular is delicious in a #clamchowder! #PNW #OregonCoast #coast #Tillamook #sandbarsaturday #beach #outdoors #shellfish
