More #Geosocial coming..

@bonfire request feedback on #UX designs for #Bonfire Geosocial.

socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/

The designs may also be inspiring to other devs working on #Geo functionality for the #fediverse and there's opportunity to align approaches for max #interoperability.

People are highly encouraged to start related more general discussion topics on improving protocol support for geosocial-enabled #ActivityPub platforms in the federated forum categories.

I created a new collection on my Ghost blog for #MySoCalledSudoLife posts:

My ultimate goal is to gather there all the #selfhosting posts I published on this #GoToSocial account this year, organized by month (aka: "my adventures in self-hosting: January 2025" etc.)

As I said before, it's not very efficient to have to scroll back in my GoToSocial archives to read up about some of the challenges I faced / solutions I found. Having everything in one place on my website feels really empowering.

What else is going on?

🔥 I'm currently testing #Bonfire - and really enjoying it so far.

☁️ I'm reading up about #NextCloud - the latest free open-source software I installed - because it has so many sophisticated functionalities and I want to take full advantage of them.

🚶‍♀️ and now off I go pick up my little one from her afternoon summer program... and then: gelato! 🍨

‘Shameful’ that bonfire with migrant effigies was allowed to go ahead (Independent, 2025-07-11)

independent.co.uk/news/uk/home
———

>> There has been widespread condemnation from politicians and church leaders to the display on the bonfire in Moygashel, Co Tyrone, which was set alight on Thursday night.

>> The boat on top of the pyre contained more than a dozen life-sized mannequins wearing life jackets, while below it were placards saying “stop the boats” and “veterans before refugees”.

>> [Amnesty] International’s Northern Ireland director Patrick Corrigan said: “It is shameful that the authorities allowed this despicable display of hate to go ahead.

>> Earlier this week, prominent loyalist activist Jamie Bryson said the #bonfire was a form of “artistic protest”.

The Independent · ‘Shameful’ that bonfire with migrant effigies was allowed to go aheadBy Jonathan McCambridge

This is disgusting. Shame on the people who created these. Shame on the people who think this is acceptable. 'Art' my arse.

The bizarre thing is that Northern Ireland has one of the lowest proportions of migrants compared to other parts of the UK or Ireland.

This post by @Bonfire really piqued my curiosity:

Especially:

"One feed, many content types.
Adding articles marks a small but significant step towards realising the vision of the open social web: a digital space where you can receive, read and interact with diverse content types from a single place, rather than juggling multiple platforms, accounts, and notification streams."

Sounds AMAZING!

bonfirenetworks.orgAnnouncing the Bonfire Social 1.0 Release CandidateAfter a long stretch of co-design, development, and reflection, we’re excited to share the Bonfire Social 1.0 Release Candidate — a version ready for real-world testing and feedback before the official 1.0 release.

Haven't turned on Federation yet, but my Bonfire instance is looking good. My second install of Bonfire. I can tell you two things: Installation was much easier this time, and performance is much better.

One note, Bonfire recommends a hungry 8 GB of memory to run, but with that amount, it runs nicely so far. I'll keep you updated, hoping to turn federation on by next weekend. (This will be an invite only instance for brave individuals that want to assist with testing)

Bonfire, by default, has federation turned off when you spin it up.

I think this is a good choice. It allows you as the admin time to configure settings, add policies, artwork, etc. - make sure all is working, before you start knocking on other people's federated doors.

#SummerSolstice #SanJuan #SantJoan #bonfire #Iowa #midsummer

Saturday marked our 31st Summer Solstice celebration. The bonfire tradition goes back to pre-christian times in Europe. The Catholic Church tried to baptize the pagan tradition, putting the feast day of a major Saint (John the Baptist) as close as possible to the Solstice. In Spain bonfires are a part of the San Juan celebrations (In Catalan-speaking areas, Sant Joan). Other countries celebrate the day under different names.

@bonfire I really like the idea behind #Bonfire, but that your website is using generative AI art (e.g. on bonfirenetworks.org/design) scared me off. It's difficult to believe your commitment to ethics and communities when you actively use such an exploitative and extractive technology. It's not unlike if you were promoting Bitcoin or NFTs; it's a massive red flag in today's tech world that you're not to be trusted. Would you consider removing any genAI and clearly crediting your artists?
