A quotation from George Carlin

Folks, I hate to spoil your fun, but — there’s no such thing as rights. Okay? They’re imaginary. We made ’em up. […] Now, if you think you do have rights, one last assignment for you. Next time you’re at the computer, get on the Internet, go to Wikipedia. When you get to Wikipedia, in the search field for Wikipedia I want you to type in “Japanese-American 1942,” and you’ll find all about your precious fucking rights, okay? […] Just when these American citizens needed their rights the most, their government took ’em away. And rights aren’t “rights” if someone can take ’em away — they’re privileges. That’s all we’ve ever had in this country is a Bill of Temporary Privileges. And if you read the news, even badly, you know that every year the list gets shorter and shorter and shorter.

The Australian Constitution

Post-9/11 Australia has pushed a tradition of exclusion to constitutional extremes
"The Constitution says nothing direct about what it means to be Australian, when a person is entitled to Australia’s protection, or who can claim to ‘belong’ to Australia. In contrast to many written constitutions, the Australian Constitution is silent on Australian citizenship."

Hey everyone, I know both Zain & his wife, Sophia. We all worked together for #SaveOldGrowth & #StopEcocide work here in #BritishColumbia. What's happened to Zain is unjust & I'm asking you all to please read this whole post & sign the #petition. Thanks for your time & help. Please boost for wider reach.

* Last week, Prime Minister #MarkCarney revealed Lena Metledge Diab will serve as Canada’s new Immigration Minister.

The first thing Diab should do as Minister is bring #ClimateActivist Zain Haq back to Canada by greenlighting his Temporary Residence Permit that has been processing since January.

Zain was deported to Pakistan in January for climate activism that resulted in low-level mischief charges. He’d been living in Canada his entire adult life, and with his Canadian wife, Sophia Papp, since 2023.

Sophia has been given the devastating choice to remain in Canada without her spouse or relocate to #Pakistan , where she doesn’t speak the language and faces significant barriers to her health and wellbeing.

A mere 48 hours before Zain was deported, he and Sophia’s Spousal Sponsorship application was rejected by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) without substantive explanation.

The couple’s lawyer, Randall Cohn, has stated that this eleventh-hour rejection is likely illegal. It also denied Zain and Sophia’s right to procedural fairness, since they didn’t have time to access the appeal process enshrined in the #BillOfRights.

Zain and Sophia’s situation is reminiscent of the #unethical treatment of many #migrants in the U.S.

#IRCC ’s last minute rejection of a young couple’s Sponsorship Application without substantive reason should raise alarm bells for anyone of conscience, but especially for those with a #legal background – and before getting into #politics , Minister Diab was a #lawyer in Halifax. That’s why we have to get Zain’s file on her desk as soon as possible. *

I know I posted this a little over a month ago, but Teri Kanefield's new book, Rebels, Robbers, and Radicals: The Story of the Bill of Rights dropped today, and it's well worth a read. Teri brings the history of the Bill of Rights to life in a way few have. This is the part of the Constitution about us all, about our individual rights, something we all need to be aware of, especially today.

I've been saying ever since the announcement of the #Brexit Referendum, that the land where 20th century human rights originated, that conceived the #MagnaCarta and the #BillOfRights, belongs into the #EuropeanUnion. Geographically and economically, it really has no sound choice.

Loudly defend the First with the Second armed to the teeth, to avoid hiding for the Third, then they won’t take the Fourth, the Fifth will be unspoken, the Sixth would be inappropriate, the Seventh wouldn’t be seated in the first place, the Eighth would be overkill, no need to outline the Ninth, and the Tenth is shared.

"So we have a contradiction. We basically have the #Constitution that says everyone, persons in the #UnitedStates have due process rights, have the #BillofRights on their side, but we also have law that has been in power for 200 years saying, oh, well, except for when the president wants to #deport people. So these are in conflict. There will have to be some decision making."

Today in Labor History December 15, 1792: The U.S. Bill of Rights was adopted promising freedom of speech, religion, the press, and "the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

190 years later, the Clash rewrote them into plain English: youtube.com/watch?v=qxl3PRmaXU
