This is a huge win in the fight against #tuberculosis in places hardest hit by multiple drug resistant TB.

Frå Politico: J&J "said Thursday it would give Stop TB Partnership´s Global Drug Facility licenses to procure and distribute generic TB treatment to most low- and middle-income countries — including certain countries where patents remain in effect. According to the WHO, 1.6 million people died from #tuberculosis in 2021 worldwide."
The #StopTB partnership released a statement this morning saying #JohnsonAndJohnson has allowed them to produce generic #bedaquiline and make it available in most developing countries, even in those where the secondary patent is still in effect.
While J&J haven’t released their own statement yet, and this isn’t a complete dropping of their patent, this is a huge step forward in ending TB and deserves to be celebrated.

What really gets me about JNJ saying ‘the most significant barrier to TB treatment access is being undiagnosed’ is that it completely ignores the fact that not everyone diagnosed with TB gets treatment because, get this, the treatment is too expensive #patientsnotpatents #JNJ #bedaquiline #tuberculosis

If 100 people boosted something between 2:35 and 2:45, but I happened to be not looking at my social media at that time, I still wouldn't know. Seeing posts here is very time-dependant.
However, some sort of algorithm might decide that if 100 people that I follow all boosted this, it sure might be something that I want to see. It would probably be right. No, it shouldn't be mandatory. I think it should be opt-in, probably even require a plug-in on the instance level.
I started thinking about this because even though several people that I follow boosted this, I nearly missed it. And I think this is something that you should see too.

Johnson & Johnson makes a drug called bedaquiline which is essential for treating certain kinds of TB. The patent for bedaquiline is set to expire next week, yet, J&J is trying a sneaky tactic to extend their patent, which means that thousands of people may die needlessly from TB in the next few years.
Ask J&J to change their mind. And if they don't remember their brands.

Johnson and Johnson face a choice - to be a company that is trustworthy, that makes the world a better place, that puts patients first, like they say in their credo - or to be the company that will kill 6 million people by withholding access to #bedaquiline, a drug that helps cure drug-resistant #tuberculosis, all so they can prop up their bottom line for four more years.
Since I know many people here on dftba.club deleted their twitters, I’ll repost john and hank’s tweets regarding #JohnsonAndJohnson’s quest to kill millions with treatable #Tuberculosis to make a few more bucks on #Bedaquiline.
