En chemin, elle est tombée dans une embuscade tendue par des paramilitaires soutenus par le gouvernement et appartenant à l'UBISORT (Union pour le bien-être social de la région Triqui). Plusieurs de mes amis ont été abattus, et l'organisateur mixtèque Bety Cariño ainsi que le militant de solidarité finlandais Jyri Jaakkola ont été assassinés. Un an après les meurtres, j'ai eu l'occasion d'accompagner les parents de Jyri lorsqu'ils se sont rendus à Oaxaca pour demander justice pour leur fils. Il n'y a rien de tel que la douleur d'un parent à qui l'on a volé son enfant.Aujourd'hui, des dizaines de personnes ont bloqué la route fédérale 190 entre Oaxaca et Huajuapan pour demander justice pour Bety et Jyri. Elle a commencé le 15 avril 2011, lorsqu'un groupe de femmes a bloqué les bûchers illégaux reliés au cartel pour retirer des arbres de la communauté.
