It's been warmer for the last week though, a few days into the mid teens C/ even near 20C/68F, so I wondered if they'd matured. Nope! 🧵 1 Here we are, more or less halfway between Winter Solstice + Spring Equinox! (Thanks to @mirabilos I've recently learned more about the calculation of #CrossQuarter Days: it's not so straightforward!)
Anyway, for me a general idea of mid-way works- I'll make my natural observations over several days anyway, and if I have time/ energy for ritual, it will depend on work/weather!

1-A bit of a mound rises from a snowy pasture- where the soil was piled when a cattle watering dugout was made long ago. It's a late winter afternoon, maybe an hour from sunset and the many little lumps and crests and ridges in the snow (made from cattle tracking around then wind blowing snow) on the mound have deep blue shadows on this side away from the sun. Behind the mound we can see a bit more of the snowy pasture then a line goes all the way across of low dark willows with here and there- mostly to the right- some smallish poplars sticking out above. We can't see how far this treed area goes exactly, but get a glimpse of another sliver of silvery snow much farther back where the ground rises a bit. Farther still are more shadowy trees and on the horizon, barely discernible, we see the foothills blue/hazy blending into the partly clouded sky (mountains behind invisible in cloud). A Line of modest fluffy clouds caps a slightly darker blue-grey with sunset highlights area above the mountains, and above those clouds the sky is faintly overcast pale grey with a hint of violet-coral!
2-Across an area of rather smooth snow broken by many small poplar suckers along with occasional other small woody things and the occasionalbit of dry grass or thistle, a loose row (a few metres wide) of youngish (maybe mid-size in diameter, at most, many skinnier) but tall follows a fenceline from left to right. Beyond we see more snowy ground and more distant low willows and trees.The soft barely golden white ball of sun shines between the trunks and branches from a dull blue sky with bits of cloud, a little less than halfway up the trees as it westers, casting long blue linear shadows from the trees on the snow in the foreground.

I was privileged over a week or so to see this beautiful #owl ! It's not uncommon for me to see owl pellets or signs of them hunting on the snow (wing marks etc) but I don't often (not even every year) see the actual birds! This one I saw 3 times over a week or so, all the decent shots +vid from one of those times.

Strix nebulosa ssp nebulosa (American) Great Grey Owl #birds #nature #Alberta #BorealForest #BirdGoddess #animist

a classic looking owl with big round head and fluffy feathered body sits atop a dead small birch trunk, looking straight at the camera. There are some willow stems around, a small skinny spruce to left and light grey sky behind. It looks like black and white, nearly since the light was poor on an overcast winter afternoon.
The same owl in flight-a rather poor photo but we see the owl from the side and mostly underneath as it flies from right to left, wings fully outstretched in a glide. It is sort of speckled/striped- looking almost woven, with near/white parts, light to dark grey, some light brown bits and some near/black bits. It is flying in front of mixed woods of smallish poplars, birch, willows and one small spruce.
The owl has now re-perched, this time on a dead dry branch of a balsam poplar. Several trunks of these poplars- medium grey and deeply furrowed, with lighter dangly somewhat twisted twigs, mingle with dull green spruce. We just see a part- maybe second quarter from the top- of these trees, with the owl in mid frame. The owls body is facing away, but it has turned its head to look back at me. Its yellow eyes and beak stand out from the surrounding white-grey-brown and black feathers.
A closer view, though a bit more from underneath looking up, of the owl in the same new perch. We can appreciate the complex yet orderly pattern of the colours on its feathers. It is looking not quite toward the camera but sort of in this direction though over my head and beyond. We can see that its face, of finer grey feathers than the body, with unmarked light grey between beak and eyes, is outlined with black, and a darker line comes from the top of the head down to the beak so the face is rather divided in two. The overall effect is a very striking and intense looking face! The function of this wide flat elaborately feathered facial disk is to help direct sounds to its ears to enhance amazing hearing abilities.

Standing in the edge of a small irregularly shaped field/pasture. Snow underfoot and ahead 20-30cm / a foot or less deep with occasional bits of grass, weed, saplings poking through and random sets of animal tracks going here and there. To the left open mixed woods with mostly poplar in front, mostly showing their own shadow, a bit of light from the sun off to the right lighting one side. the forest floor is striped with their blue snowy shadows. Farther ahead across another arm of the field, is another strip of mixed woods, mostly spruce in near silhouette. The sun hangs like a great golden white blob to the right just above these trees with light artifacts from the camera lens scattering over the trees below like faint small round rainbows and casts long shadows over the snowy field.. The sky away from the sun is blue. The image has a dull gold frame like folded ribbon and the text Blessed Solstice in an almost script font, a brighter version of the frame colour appears in bottom left.

From an open snowy area with numerous small poplar suckers sticking through the snow we look across a wire and post fence and towards a sparse line of irregularly spaced youngish poplars in near silhouette, with many suckers of varying heights among them. A bit farther and another fence then another wider open snowy area, then a dense area of low willows. The sky beyond is sunset gold and orange though about a half hour before actual sunset. The sun is not quite halfway up the view, visible as an area of brighter glow trough thin cloud and half of its disk visible below a narrow band of darker cloud. A slight intensifying filter has given a bit of violet cast and a white vignette has been applied around the edges.
