@cOAlitionS_OA Acquiescing would be a grave error for the global #scholcomm initiative. It would have the potential to unleash an existential crisis upon the #OpenAccess movement. By setting the precedent, the oligpoly would seize upon the #ADC concept -- every publisher will start introducing them, and #GreenOA — the free, low barrier way of sharing research — will be extinguished. The corporate behaviour of the #oligopoly is quite predictable.

I live in hope... #OpenResearch #OpenScience

18 months on from the American Chemical Society's (#ACS) intention to introduce an 'article development charge' (ADC) -- and this @cOAlitionS_OA repudiation of the #ADC concept -- institutions in the UK (along with Jisc) remain locked in sector negotiations with ACS on a new 'read & publish' agreement for 2025/2026. Other jurisdictions are likely in a similar position.

I remain deeply concerned that institutions will simply acquiesce to the ADC concept....

ADC 1700DD Turntable Restoration - Time to Use It

Now that it's properly functional, I'll swap out my current turntable and give it a bit of a run. Already I've got some minor things that need attention:

- Unusual rubbing sound from the drive mechanism as the tonearm approaches the end of the record.
- Find a dust cover.
- Find or fabricate additional headshells for the other moving-magnet cartridges I have.

But first, I have other projects on the bench. Speaker surround foam replacement is next.

ADC 1700DD Turntable Restoration - The Speed Controls

It's all about the speed – Quartz Lock Button and Speed Adjustment

On the left side, we've got this cluster of controls and indicators.

So, you select the record speed when you power on the unit (previous post), but here we can lock it in or tweak it. Interesting feature, but not sure what need it’s fulfilling. Based on a quick test, it looks like you can tweak the speed +/- 10%.

ADC 1700DD Turntable Restoration - The Headshell

The headshell - well, this was not the one that was originally paired with the unit when it shipped. What should have been there was this tiny-little LMH-1. I discovered the difference when I was trying to set up the cartridge with an alignment template. No way to make it align properly so that told me that something was fishy with the geometry.

And apparently this design is kinda famous in that it introduced the industry to the low-mass tonearm concept.

I met two of the guys from Supertone yesterday at #ADC, and I did get to mention that scary 'accessibility' word to them. They took my email, so hopefully, maybe, possibly, I can get a dialog going about accessibility going forward. I also got to try out 'Shift' their AI voice-changer thing. It's different from anything else I've herd/used before, but I can't exactly say how. It trains on your voice first, then it can modify it in real-time.

I just wrote scruss/micropython-MCP3001: MicroPython library for the MCP3001 10-bit 1-channel SPI Analogue-Digital converter — github.com/scruss/micropython-

(yes, very few people need an external ADC as most MicroPython boards have 'em, but this one's for the W600 users… both of us!)

Anyone had any experience with MEMS microphones. I've seen them at $0.03

I have seen some places say they have a simple output with a voltage bias already, e.g. around 0.8V.

But most things consider circuits to replace analogue microphones with capacitive coupling and a separate bias.

My thought is if the output is already DC biased, it could go directly to an ADC input on an ESP32, and need no other components to allow reading an audio input.

But data sheets seem unclear,
