"Immigration raids are causing widespread alarm in Southern California’s Asian ethnic hubs, with businesses and popular gathering spots seeing less foot traffic as people avoid potential run-ins with federal agents.

Advocates with the South Asian Network, a non-profit based in Artesia, say the city’s Little India district is getting noticeably fewer visitors, as are local temples."

I just re-watched the 1958 version of #TheQuietAmerican (starring Audey Murphy, an English actor whose name you'd never remember & an Italian actress in #YellowFace) which is set in #Indochina (aka #VietNam) in the 50's during the Vietnamese war vs the #French colonialist but is really about a #LoveTriange between an #American (who is probably a CIA -- then still probably known as the OSS -- agent, an English journalist & his Vietnamese mistress.

The film was remade in 2002 in a movie by the same name starring Michael Caine & Brendan Frazer. The 1958 movie is the better of the 2.

I have mixed feelings about this movie about 2 white men competing for an Asian woman, which reeks of the white male fetishization of Asian women but, if you strip away the inter-racial aspects of the film, it's mainly about what a man will do to save his relationship (including setting up his rival to be murdered) with the woman he loves.

I still give it a 6 out of 10 & own the DVDs of both versions.

"Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, an innocent bystander who was shot and killed Saturday at a 'No Kings' protest in Utah, is being remembered as a celebrated fashion designer who dressed the likes of 'Moana' star Auli’i Cravalho and cast members of 'The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. He also committed his life to both his Pacific Islander culture and his role as a father."

This should be interesting . . .

JJ Spaun, who just won the #USOpen at Oakmont on Sunday 6/15 is being paired with the Scottie Scheffler, currently the #1 ranked golfer in the world, in the 1st 2 rounds of the Traveler's Championship, which will start the day after tomorrow on Thursday 6/17.

I hope Spaun -- who is of Filipino, Mexican & European ancestry -- can handle his rise to fame from obscurity.

He managed it in his playoff appearance vs the #2 ranked golfer in the world at the Players Championship a couple of months ago & he handled it last week by outplaying everyone else last week.

I wouldn't expect anything less of him this week but unfortunately, like other rarely seen professional sports athletes of color, they also take on the mantle of representing their "people" whether they like it or not.

So, even if he doesn't win, which is hard to do regardless of the circumstances, I just hope he plays & represents himself well under the pressure.

Go JJ!!! 🥳🥳🥳

#JJSpaun - a golfer of #Filipino, #Mexican & #White heritage -- wins the 125th #USOpen at #Oakmont Country Cub near Pittsburg which is considered the most difficult golf course in the US, if not the world, by sinking a 64 ft birdie on the 18th hole.👋👋👋👋👋

He ended 1 under par, 2stokes ahead of the next closet golfet, after 72 holes & was thr ONLY golfer to end the tournament under par.

JJ,'s only prior PGA win was 3 yrs ago at the Valero in Texas

Go JJ!!! 🎉🎉🎉

I saw an earlier broadcast of #Yellowface on #PBS &, like others of Hwang's plays, I didn't like it. 🤷‍♂️

But #FrancisJue won a @TonyAward last night for his performance in the play on #Broadway (beating out #DanielDayKim who was nominated in another category) but I don't know what role Jue played because I turned off the show before he made an appearance.

So, I'll record the show again on 6/30 to take an actual look at Jue's performance.

Saw #LastBreath at my local AMC & just received the #DVD.

The ending was predictable but the tension in the movie trying to figure out how it would happen was still engaging.

All too often when an Asian actor is cast in a US made movie, some mention or reference of his/her race is often made in order somehow excuse or justify the casting.

So, I liked how Simu's race was never mentioned & didn't matter in his playing an experienced diver in the film.

"A San Francisco boy with a rare bone marrow disease has been on the donor waitlist for over a year, facing challenges finding a match due to his Chinese and Vietnamese heritage"

instagram.com/reel/DJ6CvTmx819

InstagramGia Vang on Instagram: "Kenji gave me a hug when I met him. A hug after hanging out with his friends on the playground. Another hug when we parted ways. And he ran towards me with arms open for a last hug when he realized we were walking in the same direction. Then he told me “you nice.” It was the sweetest. Kenji is 4-years-old and lives in San Francisco. He has a rare bone marrow disease and needs a transplant. But he hasn’t been able to find one because of his mixed raced background. He is Chinese and Vietnamese. Kenji is part of a critical and fast growing problem. Asian patients seeking marrows transplants have just a 47% chance of finding a suitable match. Of the more than 9 million donors in the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) only 9% identify as AAPI. When you’re mixed race and Asian like Kenji, that pool shrinks even more. His parents are running out of time and may need to find an alternative if a donor doesn’t come forth soon. If you’d like to register to help save a life, you can do that with NMDP by texting NCAPI to 61474 today. You fill out a short questionnaire and then will be sent a simple swab kit with instructions. You do it and send it all back and you should be in the system about 6 to 8 weeks later. Unfortunately, donors can’t specifically request to test match with Kenji, but NMDP will place the person into the database for any matching candidates… which could be Kenji. @nmdp_org @aadp_org 🎥: @fuse_deepercutz . . . #donor #nationalmarrowdonorprogram #bonemarrow #bonemarrowtransplant #bonemarrowdonor #aapi #asian #asianamerican #aanhpi #veryasian #ethnicity #mixedrace #multiracial #chinese #vietnamese #chinesevietnamese #viet #children #childhoodcancer #rarecancer #aanhpiheritagemonth #aapiheritagemonth #sanfrancisco #sf #sanfran #bayarea #thebay #bay #stemcell #stemcelltranaplant"112 likes, 10 comments - giavang on May 21, 2025: "Kenji gave me a hug when I met him. An interesting person & an interesting video interview . . .

"How does the daughter of a Mexican mother and a Chinese-American father develop a love for African American literature? By visiting Russia.

'There is no canon of me,” says Stephanie Li, Duke’s new research professor of African & African American Studies. “There is no Chinese-Mexican-American canon of literature to read.'

Instead, she started with Dostoevsky."
