Operating Superstars - 2 more character articles

Two more character bios have been published for the project #Wiki; Wénjié’s as one of the characters to first appear in "To the Visitors…" and Regina as one of them to first appear in chapter 3 of "Same Place, Different Universe."

📄 operatingsuperstars.miraheze.o

Wénjié’s article mentions some former rivalries that she had. I still don’t have a lot of specific details set about how the conflicts of the 90’s took form (and whether they involved combat), but something I can establish is that some of them could be reconciled.

She’s friends with her former rivals from Chariots of Colors and may have reconciled with them quickly since she had other rivalries that were much more serious and personal (i.e: Windowx 3.x competing against OS/2 and DR-DOS). One of them was never resolved.

Regina’s article was difficult to write since she’s the first character I wrote an article for that debuted after the setting’s default "present time" of 2010.

I considered whether to write her role and characterization in the future tense as a character who debuted in "the future", but I decided to write them in the present tense to keep her article consistent with the other character articles.

In May I set up this page to mirror the Operating Superstars story chapters:

📄 synergyeclipse30.neocities.org

When I put this together, I didn’t have an index page ready so there’s no link to it. I still don’t, but should work on that. However, just in case anyone removed the “story_chapters” part of the URL to go to the index, I published a #ShortStory that was meant to be an Easter egg along with the story chapters page!

I included the illustrations from the story here.

This story references a few easter eggs including one in Windows 3.1 of a bear in a suit, and the System 7 “Blue Meanies” messages.

This formerly unlisted story is now added to the project #Wiki and is the actual first story appearance for a few characters.

I finished up the first versions of the articles for Etta and Phuong on the project #Wiki (I published Etta’s quite a few days ago some some things came up)! Etta was a member of the PrDP with a long and varied career! She became used to the classroom environments, but she is tough on land and sea from her work in industrial environments and when she worked on ships.

Etta:

Phuong:

She mainly represents the PDP-8, but she also represents the PDP-5, PDP-14 and LINC-8 and each of them also add on to her varied career path. Her article has details that apply as of the timeframe of “I Was a Software Developer…” since that’s the story she’s been featured in, but in “the present”, she would continue to have active roles and would likely be a member of at least one hobbyist club.

Phuong mainly represents the PDP-9 but also represents the PDP-15, and through the latter she also got into the field of the arts since the PDP-15 has its own graphics tablet.

Her modern whereabouts are partially known since she has appeared in a modern story; she is known to be a member of TIMES and supervised at least one venture into another universe.

Whelp, I now have wiki pages fleshed out for ALPRs and gunshot detectors on the #osm wiki. Consider these a first stab at writing down / establishing a normalized set of tags and practices for ALPRs and other surveillance tech (like gunshot detectors):

wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Ta

wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Ta

I'm honestly not a fan of having discussion live only in Discord --- or any ephemeral IM platform. I like forums --- or at least wiki talk pages --- better :P

Operating Superstars -- Two more for the Programmable Darling Patrol

I’ve been busy lately working on character articles for my project #Wiki before I’ll be busy with other things soon. Now that I published the first versions for the characters that appeared in “System Time Reset…”, I’m back to focusing on them for most of the characters that appeared in the ongoing story “I Was a Software Developer…”

Piper:
📄 operatingsuperstars.miraheze.o

Polyxena:
📄 operatingsuperstars.miraheze.o

Writing these was tricky at parts because some details about them may be applicable during the timeframe IWASD takes place (which starts in 1977) but might not be in the present; skillsets, affiliations and occupations can change. Friendships and rivalries can change.

I also haven’t gotten into mentioning which clubs these characters might be members of in “the present”, but that can be added on to later.

Their articles focus on the timeframe of IWASD, but I intend for them and other historical characters to still have relevant and ongoing roles in “the present” that give them more potential to appear in other stories.

As I have mentioned from time to time, I am dissatisfied with the way I share folk tales here on Mastodon - as image files, since my scheduling tool ( @bufferapp ) doesn't allow me to use the full character limit of my instance. This is not great from an #accessibility point of view, and I would like to do better.

One alternative I am currently contemplating is setting up my own #wiki as a subdomain of my website (hosted by gandi.net), put the tales there, and just link to them.

The question is: Which wiki installation should I use? The most important aspect is that the wiki generates good social media preview cards (for the #Fediverse first and foremost, but I am not opposed to other platforms sharing my stories). If you can create custom preview cards, so much the better.

I am currently contemplating #MediaWiki , since it has the most options by far. Its ability to sort pages into multiple breadcrumb categories would be very useful as well. But I am open to other suggestions, if you have them.

So, which wiki system generates the best social media preview cards that are compatible with the Fediverse? #FediHelp

Mediawiki documentation is like:

Dio: I'd like to make a left turn. Can I make one here?

MW: Directional modification in mediawiki is handled using the Special:CompassPoints page. Administrators must configure the CompassNotTheSamePage.css. The default behavior of MediaWiki is to allow only right turns so to left turn a new "turn class" object must be created on the Special:OtherShit page and the TurnFunction must be inserted in the most unintuitive place on the Signal.Turn page. See this entirely useless example.

Admins born on a Weds must follow the alternate instructions at (Page Not Found) for reasons we are going to leave maddeningly vague.
