_The Evening Post_, 16 February 1925:
PERSONAL MATTERS

The death is announced of Captain Arthur #Irvine at Timaru on Saturday. Born at Larwick, Shetland Islands, in 1835, the late Captain Irvine was a well-known figure in the New Zealand coastal trade some years back. He went to sea at an early age, and arrived in Australia in 1856, and in. New Zealand four years later. For nine years Captain Irvine was with the New Zealand Steam Navigation Company, Wellington, and during that period rose to the position of chief mate. In 1872 he took charge of the Wanganui-built vessel Tongariro, and later was in the Egmont. He was appointed pilot at #Wanganui in 1878, and shortly afterwards became harbour-master and pilot there, a position which he held for a number of years.

#Taranaki becomes the third #naturalfeature in #Aotearoa aka New Zealand to be granted legal #personhood following #TeUrewera in 2014 and the #Whanganui River in 2017. That designation means the geographic features gain the legal status of a person, ensuring they are treated with respect and protection.

“When we think about the concept of personhood, what we are doing is putting in place a very #Māori! #Indigenous concept into western law,” Jamie Tuuta

_The Evening Post_, 8 September 1924:
WOMEN IN PRINT.

Travelling on the train from Wanganui to Palmerston North the other day (relates the “Manawatu Daily Times”) were a well-dressed ardent couple, and throughout the journey they amused their fellow-passengers with their cooing. After a while the fair young thing leaned back in her seat and fell asleep, while the young man took advantage of the respite to adjourn to the smoker for a cigar. While he was away, a tall, thin, grizzly man came in and sat down in the vacant seat beside the sleeping beauty. Presently she stirred in her dreams, laid her head lovingly upon the shoulder of the stranger and placed her slim young arm around his neck. The stranger appeared surprised at this unexpected demonstration of affection, but made no desperate effort to escape, merely grinning at the convulsed passengers. The outburst of hilarity awoke the young woman, who, upon opening her eyes, saw her mistake. With flushing cheeks she stammered an apology. “You needn’t apologise to me,” drawled the stranger. “I don’t mind.”

colour photograph. This shot resonates with me and reminds me of Wes Andersons movies which I religiously watched as a kid. Classics like Fantastic Mr Fox and Grand Budapest Hotel. My brother and I are fascinated by the way he composes his scenes with elegance and symmetry while keeping to a minimalist but bright colour scheme. This image does this to a ‘T’ but in our small town of Whanganui I passed these houses everyday going to school. Seeing images like this sets new perspectives of the world that we already inhabit and I really appreciate that. Collection of the Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua Whanganui. Purchased, 1996.

"Bid to secure spot for glacier in #Icelandic presidential race heats up - Standing in the shadow of Iceland’s #Snæfellsjökull, – a 700,000-year-old #glacier perched on a volcano and visible to half the country’s population on any given day – in 2010, Angela Rawlings was struck by an unconventional thought.

“It suddenly just came to me. What if the glacier was #president?” said Rawlings. It was a seemingly unorthodox way to push forward a movement that was already swiftly advancing; #Ecuador had enshrined legal rights for nature while #Māori in #NewZealand were working to secure legal personhood for the #Whanganui River.

More than a decade later, Rawlings’ musing has snowballed into what is perhaps the continent’s most singular presidential bid, as a team of more than 50 people scrambles to secure Snæfellsjökull a spot on the ballot in the country’s upcoming election on 1 June.

Among the first to hear the idea was Daria Testo. “I immediately was like, yup, OK. Let’s do it,” said Testo. “I come from the Indigenous lands in #Siberia, and therefore personhood of #nature is something that is so common to the culture and the psyche in general.”
...
“Half the population of #Iceland is watching this glacier melt between 2024 and 2050,” said Rawlings, pointing to research suggesting that Iceland’s glaciers are at risk of disappearing within the next 200 years. “I’ve been personally referring to #glaciers as the charismatic, geographic phenomenon of the #ClimateEmergency."
