What does cancelling a show like #TheLateShowWithStephenColbert mean today? They should be able to go independent, right?

Kinda. We still don't have all the pieces in place to get them up on technology they can fully control, distributed to an audience as ready to receive them, or get them paid directly. We're definitely moving in that direction but if you want this to be possible, please help. Talk about it and fund the projects. #DemocracyOfReach

If I understand correctly, social media displaced RSS as a way to subscribe to blogs. But then once big tech decided that limiting reach was more profitable, going back to a protocol to avoid corporate control via email newsletters became popular. But now that substack dominates the space, we have a perfect opportunity for #ActivityPub and services you can run however you want like #ghost and #wordpress. But then we also really need readers and payments.

Damnit. This (and the podcast so far) really just feels like an attempt to push #nostr and #bitcoin, not a serious effort to advance the best decentralized solutions for our problems. I'm open to them but my understanding so far is that they have lots of downsides that make other options (like #ActivityPub and #WebMonetization) worth putting more effort behind. Where are the public conversations between experts on both sides who can hash it out understandably for us?

This week, #JonStewart focused the show on the parent company of his network folding to pressure from Trump. That can't be going over well. He ended his last show on Apple TV because they pushed back on his wanting to do episodes about #Israel #China and AI.

I dream of everything indie tech/media being in place so that he could run something as well done as #TheDailyShow on his own website, with no ads or corporate oversight. Then we can say we made it.

I would not be involved with the Web Monetization specification or @Interledger if either existed to promote the use of cryptocurrencies.

The Interledger Foundation is committed to improving digital financial inclusion, with a focus on digital payments.

Digital public infrastructure—such as open banking payments that use central bank-managed clearing, settlement, and currency exchange—are a better path forward than cryptocurrencies. It’s just taking a bit longer to build.

WebMonetization.org uses the OpenPayments.dev specification, which can work with any payment network that chooses to support it.

The only payment network so far to implement the Open Payments APIs is one of 3 financial service providers that peer with each other using the Interledger Protocol.

Interledger Protocol is not specific to any specific currency—local or cryptocurrency.

The first 3 wallet providers will provide service using local currencies, not cryptocurrencies.

Cloudflare’s “pay-per-crawl” concept for AI seems like charging a search engine to send you traffic. Opting out of a discovery or traffic referral mechanism seems like a bad idea for websites monetized by time spent on page.

I typically click 2 or more of the linked sources in a Google AI search result summary because they often are the most relevant results, but I do not trust Google to have summarized them correctly.

#InterLedger.org are one of a number of organisations who have been working towards a payments protocol. They drafted a web standard called Web Monetization;

... which @matt of @writefreely was experimenting with on write.as, back in 2020.

If you want to grill @Interledger about it, they're here in the fediverse with their own Mastodon instance.
