When my son showed symptoms of lymphoma at 13 years old, the radiologist requested an emergency CT scan. This scan provided the basis for his cancer diagnosis and allowed us to get him to Duke children’s oncology the very next day to begin his treatment journey. The problem? Our insurance company denied reimbursement for the CT scan because we “failed to obtain prior authorization” - a process that would have taken a couple of weeks and would have delayed the initiation of my child’s treatment. It was extremely stressful for me to be forced to fight with an insurance company to cover the scan that was medically necessary to diagnose my child with cancer. I was frightened and trying to care for my sick child while the insurance company demonstrated a complete lack of empathy for what we were going through. Hopefully, these stories will help change this unacceptable reality.
