My adapter cable thing turned up but it's wrong. How many bloody types of usb are there now? I needed at mini usb female to usb c but my mini usb legacy thingy is not hollow (A or B?) . I give up. I've kinda fudged it with something else but it's bloody annoying. #usb #grr

I guess @rasteri and other #PC104 users can now get the beloved #ISA-#USB #Flashdrive card with native PC104 pinout to stack on boards.

  • Not that this is much of an engineering feat, as PC/104 is just a different form factor of ISA, but still nifty for #legacy / #industrial setups that may want to have more flexibility re: data storage.

I wounder if anyone got those ISA-USB controllers to work on #Linux distros tho.

  • Obviously they're slow (according to @TechTangents in the realm of a 1x CD-ROM drive) and not bootable, but still useful for systems without native USB ports.

I sadly don't have any system with ISA or PC/104 at hand (gotta build one i.e. #tiny486) so I can't test it anyway, but maybe a future revision of the #WeeCee may benefit from such an option (which I think also has the potential to be a good "bridge machine" for people dealing with legacy / industrial systems...

@lymenzies From my own experience I can tell that even the Original #RaspberryPi and #PiZero can run #RaspberryPiOS all day long and will run circles around the orginal #EeePC701, only getting beaten by the #Vaio #P11Z when it comes to #RAM and #IO options.

  • Granted a #CM4 or #CM5 with > 2GB RAM will shift the tides but those alone cost more than a used #Wyse3040 and #upcycling a #ThinClient into something like a tiny luggable is propably more budget friendly and useful anyway, espechally since built-in Gigabit #Ethernet and #USB 3.0 really kick ass, so you'd propably be better served doing some #PoE / Wide-Range DC-in & battery setup to make good use of the oversized build volume at hand.

  • Maybe take some "THICC" 21700 LiFePO4 cells or one of those #LiFePO4 motorcycle batteries for a spin? Pretty shure that you can sqeeze battery runtime measured in DAYS out of it without much tweaking.

Fosstodonlymenzies (@lymenzies@fosstodon.org)@kkarhan@infosec.space I see pi zero on the list. It would be amazing to actually do something useful with these. I have several and they are excruciatingly slow. Hard to believe I used to use Linux on a 386 with 4MB of RAM, but maybe I was more patient then. I'll try building OS1337 when I have a moment.

@vwestlife Yes they did, and I saw them #retail in #Germany at #ConradElectronic but they quickly flopped for two reasons:

1. The #hinge mechanism made them fiddly to insert into devices, as that design isn't up to #SD spec which expects a ridgid body.

2. They costed more than an equal-capacity & speed card plus a #cardreader.

3. Basically everyone who used #SDcard already had a #CardReader and #USB #flashdrives were also cheaper than these things.

The only person I knew that used one was someone who fiddled with an original #RaspberryPi|s a lot and they used it with a USB cable permanently plugged in so they can quickly access the files when the Pi is shut down.

  • Once I showed them that they can also access files and transfer them via #SSH instead of having to setup #Samba for #SMB shares they ditched that.

@arrjay because the #HIDman by @rasteri is a pretty solid project and since most of these boards don't handle #USB-#HID well and I want to check PS/2 compatibility and function without needing to hookup my #ModelM all the time, this is a transparent solution for all OSes one would want.

  • Plus someone already did a HIDman card that does just spit out USB ports on a PCI/ISA bracket.

Thus it makes total sense to go with it: "Why reinvent the wheel when there are rims and tires ready to roll?"

When I use something like an external hard drive or CD-ROM, I have a stable connection whatever I do, moving the computer etc. However, with my external audio interface, only a slight touch to the USB plug causes an abrupt end of connection and the need to reconnect.

Can anybody tell me the connection is so much more fragile in this case?

Gamaredon in 2024: Cranking out spearphishing campaigns against Ukraine with an evolved toolset

Throughout 2024, Gamaredon focused exclusively on targeting Ukrainian governmental institutions with spearphishing campaigns and weaponized USB drives. The group developed six new tools and significantly updated existing ones, improving stealth and evasion capabilities. Gamaredon increased the scale of its spearphishing campaigns, especially in the second half of the year. The group also made efforts to bypass network-based blocking, hiding most of its command and control infrastructure behind Cloudflare tunnels. Notable updates include enhancements to PteroLNK for weaponizing network drives, improvements in file exfiltration techniques, and the introduction of new downloaders. Despite these advancements, Gamaredon showed signs of operational limitations, occasionally abandoning or infrequently updating certain tools.

@blog thx for the #HonestWords.

To me that touchscreen sounds awful.

Most 3rd party products that aim to compete with any established brand at least get the #price lower than the established players if they can't be assed to at least have the same level of #documentation, #quality or #support than i.e. #RaspberryPi.

  • At that insultingly high price I can get a #Pi0W2, an #HDMI + #GPIO / #USB touchscreen of the same resolution and still have change for a decent microSD and Power Supply, and that can display anything.

For €100 I can get some 1080p screen if not a decent #touchscreen if I snipe the right corners and ain't afraid of returns and refurbished parts.

  • At that price point it's absolutely not acceptable that they didn't put even a DSI connector on and included a HDMI driver board in the box. Espechally when it's not an #eInk screen!

Jedne słuchawki do pracy i do gier. Creative prezentuje uniwersalny zestaw HS-230

Of all the cool things USB can do, running a small fan off a 20000 mAh lithium battery where you need it most really still amazes me. It's hot. I need a small fan. I can't run an extension cord. USB fan to the rescue. And with a big battery pack it will run for almost 24 total hours. The me from the past would not believe it possible. #usb #power #heat #fan #technology
