@sidalsolgun @daniel1820815 personally, if you actually want/need some "#Antivirus" on #Linux, consider #ESET's offering...

help.eset.com/eeau/12/en-US/
eset.com/us/business/download/

Personally, I consider Antivirus on Linux as #bloatware outside of #Fileserver and #eMail systems, but that's because I act as "#BenevolentDictator" and ban users from using external drives.

  • But that's me who actually invests the time and effort to educate #TechIlliterates and who's working in more sensitive IT than most.

So the tolerance to violations is near zero and proven willingful infraction of ITsec rules range from getting fired to jailtime in many situations.

  • Thus Antivirus, regardless in #ClamAV or commercial offerings, is not a threat when most systems require insiders (like modern "#Affiliate" #Ransomware) to plant them.

@watchfulcitizen @adisonverlice The problem is not @mullvadnet but #VPN|s in general.

People need to put realistic expectations into what #MullvadVPN and others like #Mullvad can and can't do, both technically and legally.

#ComSec, #ITsec, #InfoSec & #OpSec need to be interweaved!

  • Granted Mullvad, like @monocles, go out of their way to minimze the amounts of data they have, so there's not much they can hand over even when forced under duress to comply with a duely issued warrant!

Any decent @cryptoparty@chaos.social / @cryptoparty@mastodon.earth will advise you further...

Twitterthaddeus e. grugq on Twitter“I’m gonna tell you a secret about “logless VPNs” — they don’t exist. Noone is going to risk jail for your $5/mo https://t.co/Q2aOQJkG4g”

@thygrrr @PallasRiot Personally, I'd not count on @mullvadnet being a "#LoglessVPN" because if they were unable and/or unwilling to comply they would've been shut down due to the statistical inevitability of being swarmed by bad actors!

This is far more complex than just #ComSec, but #InfoSec, #OpSec & #ITsec come together and need to be weaved into a continuous, multi-layered pattern...

  • Your mileage may vary depending on your needs, demands, threats, budget, capabilities and options.

"JuSt UsE a VpN!" is dangerous #disinfo towards #TechIlliterates!

Infosec.SpaceKevin Karhan :verified: (@kkarhan@infosec.space)@hakan_geijer@kolektiva.social @PallasRiot@treehouse.systems The only *"legitimate use case"* for a commercial #VPN I know of is circumventing #Geoblocking... - Neither will a VPN prevent leakage of data! That's why I *explicitly recommended* using #Tails, because that does have mitigations in place against that and @torproject@mastodon.social / #TorBrowser does so too... - Again: Your mileage may vary and depend on the individual threat assessment on a case-by-case basis.

@pluralistic Personally, I wished I could just sue both #Google and #PayPal to not nag me with that shit but as much as I'd love to see someone like @wbs_legal to push that, I have more pressing things to attend to right now...

infosec.space/@undefined/11483

My reservations and criticism re: #Signal are not just valid, but the reality is even worse than I thought:

  • The fact that @signalapp requires not only their shitty #Android #App, and a #PhoneNumber but literally won't allow people to use their shitty #Desktop-App unless they have an Android device with a camera pointed at it makes it utterly unuseable for certain users who don't have a fucking #camera in their Android

Seriously, do they expect folks to deal with that shit?

FIX THAT SHIT, @Mer__edith, and if it means you need to kick some devs in their crouch then consider this a necessary "investment"

@MichalBryxi @SecurityWriter @MastodonEngineering I agree to an extent.

It's sad that #Xandros on the original #EeePC seems to be peak #Linux #Desktop when it comes to #TechIlliterates...

  • And that needs to be changed

@SecurityWriter I don't defend this, nor anything else that @MastodonEngineering / #Mastodon #devs do, including stifling and sabotaging the need for good moderation tools.

  • In return I think that the arguments pushed against the #Fediverse by (alleged) #TechIlliterates are not worth entertaining, cuz the same folks would also dismiss any alternative to #GMail cuz they'd have to 'choose a Server'....

If we can't expect #users to make informed decisions, then maybe they should not be allowed to use tech.

  • Sorry for me #venting, but noone would dismiss #eMail because #mutt is not a beginner-friendly eMail client for folks that can't even use a goddamn mouse, as so many #Zoomers these days do.

I gladly teach people tech but most don't want to learn or even follow through on suggestions, advice and take explanaitions to their answers, and at a certain point that's just tiring...

@LaF0rge @sysmocom I do agree on that one.

The main problem with some mandate in that regard is that such regulations then get flexed against consumers.

Notable examples are the:

  • #IMEI-Blocking in #Turkey after 90 days and subsequent demand for #KYC even for #Roaming devices.
  • #Australia's IMEI-Firewall because some morons decided they wanted to axe #2G & #3G despite millions of devices that can't do #VoLTE still being in use.

Now granted anyone who can manipulate the IMEI can circumvent that but that means 99,9% of all users aka. "#TechIlliterates" can't.

@smote legally yes, practically no because already the #prohibitionist shite has already migrated away from that.

  • Note the fine wording here, which only states "crypto asset service providers [...] maintaining anonymous accounts"...

Exchanges like #ChangeNow will just do #KYC and everyone who doesn't want/can will merely go to back alleys and swap that way or simply use non-EU exchanges and/or swap Monero into some shitcoins and/or the other way around.

  • Obviously neither recommending nor vouching for any services for obvious reasons. All I'm saying is that it's never about #MoneyLaundering or #CTF, but merely exerting #Cyberfacism against #TechIlliterates whilst those that do want to facilitate illicit business have enough mules in traditional finance...

Again: #CashByMail is still not illegal...

@ml I've heard of #RustDesk, but lets just say the whole "it's not #SaaS!" when it clearly is a #subscription #licensing scheme is kinda off-putting to me...
rustdesk.com/pricing/?lang=en

That doesn't mean they are bad - far from it.

I just use #Dayon because it's very easy to walkthrough #TechIlliterates when it comes to getting #RemoteSupport up and running with them.
