“also was there! was working at the SF Chronicle down at 5th & Mission. Heard about it 15 minutes before it was about to start. Hopped on my motorcycle and tore ass up to North Beach in time to see them play from a trailer in the #TowerRecords parking lot. Was severely late getting back to the office but WTF it was worth it!” — #skirblog5119, youtube comment*

I read “Ways of Seeing” as a teen because Kim Gordon of #SonicYouth mentioned it in an interview. I re-read it as a young adult, and was impressed by how the book complicated the idea of subjectivity in a way that echoed #feminist thought.

Now in my mid-40s, I’m at the age when it’s been about 20+ years since I’ve read certain seminal, formative texts and it feels like a good time to revisit them. Another one I’ve been thinking about is #Assata.

Tonight, #SonicYouth's #KimGordon joins me to talk about art, noise, and whatever else the cool kids will be imitating five years from now.

I’ll also spin Dusty Springfield (icon), INXS (fashion goals), The Bad Plus (Disney jazz, no kidding), Plumb (you remember), The Sundays (sigh), Pavement (crooked rain), the Fresh Prince theme (you know every word), and new Olivia Dean (future icon alert).

Tune in at 6p ET, WFPK — because algorithms don’t love you like real DJs do.

On the 29th of March 1985, Sonic Youth's second studio album, Bad Moon Rising, hit the stores.

Deeply rooted in the DIY ethos of their earlier years, this was the band's first widely available outing outside New York and ground zero for more than a few future fans.

"They made records that were not only artistically respected but popular; they helpfully provided at least the illusion that rock still had some fresh tricks up its sleeve."
