All the rest are cloud reliant. <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/smartthings" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>smartthings</span></a> is fine, in that it doesn't have a smart speaker listening 24/7 like the ones you mentioned. It does mean using your phone for everything, but that said it does work very well. </p><p>I'd say if you want it to Just Work(tm) then Smartthings. Habitat is OK if you don't mind a bit of Internet searching to get things working. Home Assistant if you're a perpetual tinkerer that wants *everything* on one platform. </p><p>I've used Hubitat, Smartthings and Home Assistant extensively. My permanent system is Smartthings.</p>

Almost all my switches/dimmers/plugs are Zigbee or Matter now, with a few remaining Shelly Wi-Fi devices. My platform of choice after about a year of testing? <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/smartthings" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>smartthings</span></a> - it works great with Zigbee and Matter, and with a community plugin on the hub it works fine with the Shelly devices I have. Smartthings is connected to Google Assistant (which will run locally for simple stuff like turning lights on/off), and automations work great. I just run <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/homebridge" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>homebridge</span></a> in a VM on my NAS to link Smartthings to Apple Home, which also has been rock solid.</p>
pezhore<p>So all things seem to be lined up for purchasing my first house at the end of August - inspections, appraisals, etc. now in addition to packing up the townhome with nearly a decade of accumulated stuff I get to think about home automation/smart things.</p><p>I'll be bringing over my Ubiquiti cameras (local storage for the win), but thermostats, door sensors, etc - all up for grabs. I'm in the rare Greenfield state, and if anyone has suggestions for stuff to get, that'd be sweet.</p><p>I'll need to decide on the platform (Hubitat/SmartThings/Home Assistant), thermostat options, and possibly simple door, window integration. BPlanZ :donor:<p>Rant - Internet / Cloud Connectivity is NOT Always Required (should not be)!!!<br>I had a week long Internet outage and I could not dim my light bulbs!! My wife was ready to replace the bulbs with dumb bulbs.<br>TLDR - rural Internet setup and I had to order a replacement wireless bridge.<br>When my internet was out, my <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/Smartthings" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Smartthings</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/homeautomation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>homeautomation</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/IoT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>IoT</span></a> system did not work. Ok, if Smarthings did not have a local hub that is (used to be) capable of talking to my wifi app (WiFi was still working). Or an interface I could log into. Ugh.<br>What makes this worse is I am an IoT geek. I used to do embedded and overall system design. Today I do IoT security. I know it is possible and used to work without cloud - internet connectivity . did I say Ugh!</p>

Connel<p>Just installed <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Fedora" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Fedora</span></a> on an old Mac Book Pro, seems to run ok but I need to figure out how to get the WiFi to work.</p><p>Being on <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mastodon</span></a> now and migrating from <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/SmartThings" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SmartThings</span></a> to <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a> has made me wanna get back into <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> and <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/FOSS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FOSS</span></a> again.</p><p>Installing <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/NextCloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NextCloud</span></a> on my server is also on my to-do list.</p>
