Westport Observatory<p>This week, if you can find a clear patch of sky, Orion will be at its highest in the south around 8 p.m. The Aldebaran-Jupiter-Pleiades triangle will form a perfect right triangle throughout the week and next. It's also a great time to observe the zodiacal light. <a href="https://ow.ly/i3ei50V0xtQ" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">ow.ly/i3ei50V0xtQ</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://vmst.io/tags/SkyandTelescope" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SkyandTelescope</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/Astronomy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Astronomy</span></a></p>
Westport Observatory<p>Tonight 1/17, after sunset, see Saturn and bright Venus cuddle in the cold Southwest. The Parade of Planets continue with second brightest planet Jupiter sailing above with rusty red Mars slowly retrograding westward in Gemini just past opposition, moving across the heavens tonight! <a href="https://ow.ly/ObuB50UIHW9" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">ow.ly/ObuB50UIHW9</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://vmst.io/tags/SkyandTelescope" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SkyandTelescope</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/Astronomy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Astronomy</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/Saturn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Saturn</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/Venus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Venus</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/Mars" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mars</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/Jupiter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Jupiter</span></a></p>
Westport Observatory<p>THIS WEEK - Winter begins at 4:20 am Saturday, Jupiter's moon Io pops out of the planet's shadow Wednesday and the moons have a wacky alignment next Saturday, Venus shines in the southwest at dusk, Mercury has great viewing before sunrise, Mars brightens below Castor and Pollux and there's a new Moon on the 30th. Westport Observatory<p>It's a month of interesting occultations! The first occurs on the night of Nov. 15-16 when the Full Moon will hide anywhere from a few to all of the brightest members of the Pleiades cluster for observers across the U.S. However, it's just past a full moon and it will make seeing the Pleiades difficult. Spica is easy to see when it gets gobbled up on the 27th. <a href="https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-news/observing-news/watch-the-moon-occult-the-pleiades-spica-too/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-</span><span class="invisible">news/observing-news/watch-the-moon-occult-the-pleiades-spica-too/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://vmst.io/tags/Occultation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Occultation</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/Pleiades" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pleiades</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/Spica" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Spica</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/SkyandTelescope" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SkyandTelescope</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/Moon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Moon</span></a></p>
Westport Observatory<p>The Taurids continue this week, Mercury makes an appearance under bright Venus after sunset, and the First-quarter Moon sits in Capricornus tonight. Also this evening, Jupiter's moon Io has its shadow cross the planet's face from 8:51 to 11:03 p.m. EST, followed by Io itself at 9:34 p.m. with the Great Red Spot transiting at 10:19 p.m. Sunday the moon cozies up to Saturn and actually occults the planet if you're south of Florida. The Full Beaver Moon is next Friday. Westport Observatory<p>IN THE SKY THIS WEEK - Comet A3 continues to shrink and fade as it recedes into the inky murk, Venus is in conjunction with orange Antares low in twilight on Friday, Halloween evening is moonless, but it offers three bright planets. Venus is very low and after dark, Saturn is the brightest little dot high toward the south-southeast. By about 10, Jupiter has climbed up to dominate the east. If you're very lucky you may catch some fireballs from the Taurids.</p><p><a href="https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-news/observing-news/this-weeks-sky-at-a-glance-october-25-november-3/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-</span><span class="invisible">news/observing-news/this-weeks-sky-at-a-glance-october-25-november-3/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://vmst.io/tags/SkyandTelescope" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SkyandTelescope</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/Astronomy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Astronomy</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/Jupiter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Jupiter</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/Taurids" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Taurids</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/Venus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Venus</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/Saturn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Saturn</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/CometA3" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CometA3</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/Halloween" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Halloween</span></a></p>
Westport Observatory<p>October '24 has already been a month many of us will never forget, but it's about to get even better with the arrival of Comet A3. Appearing just after sunset, the comet will quickly rise moving away from the glare of the sun and glide to the South as it retreats back into the outer solar system. However, over the next week or so, we could be rewarded with some gorgeous naked eye and binocular views. Here's how to see C/2023 A3: <a href="https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-news/get-ready-for-comet-tsuchinshan-atlas-the-best-is-yet-to-come" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-</span><span class="invisible">news/get-ready-for-comet-tsuchinshan-atlas-the-best-is-yet-to-come</span></a></p><p><a href="https://vmst.io/tags/CometA3" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CometA3</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/WestportCT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WestportCT</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/WestportObservatory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WestportObservatory</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/C2023A3" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>C2023A3</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/SkyandTelescope" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SkyandTelescope</span></a></p>
Westport Observatory<p>With these CME's racing off the surface of the sun and headed towards Earth, there's a chance that we could see some aurora pop up around the world starting this evening and through the weekend. While Saturday night into Sunday morning looks like when the strongest of the CME's will arrive, the smaller ones could get the skies rocking in northern tier states tonight, 10/3. Westport Observatory<p>Earth is getting a temporary "mini moon" this weekend. The asteroid 2024 PT5, discovered in early August, will pass close enough to the Earth to be captured into an orbit, but will be perturbed out of it by late November. The asteroid is about 10 meters across and could be a piece of lunar ejecta or even space junk, astronomers state. "It's as if you are taking a long walk in the woods and a dog comes along and joins you for a while, before wandering away," said one scientist. "During that time, you had a companion, but it is not your dog." <a href="https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-news/earths-new-temporary-mini-moon-arrives-this-weekend" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-</span><span class="invisible">news/earths-new-temporary-mini-moon-arrives-this-weekend</span></a></p><p><a href="https://vmst.io/tags/MiniMoon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MiniMoon</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/SkyandTelescope" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SkyandTelescope</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/2024PT5" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>2024PT5</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/Asteroid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Asteroid</span></a></p>

Westport Observatory<p>Tuesday night 9/17 is the Super Harvest Moon - nearly 3′ larger than average and this year it's also a partial lunar eclipse. It is the first and only time the Moon ducks into Earth’s umbral shadow in 2024. As you can see from the picture, this lunar eclipse is VERY subtle. In fact, most won't even be able to notice that 3.8% of the Moon will reside in the umbra at maximum. This will be most visible from 10:12 pm to 11:17 pm with the greatest eclipse at 10:44 EDT. </p><p><a href="https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-news/harvest-moon-takes-a-quick-dip-in-earths-shadow" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-</span><span class="invisible">news/harvest-moon-takes-a-quick-dip-in-earths-shadow</span></a></p><p><a href="https://vmst.io/tags/HarvestMoon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HarvestMoon</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/LunarEclipse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LunarEclipse</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/Moon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Moon</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/Lunar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lunar</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/SuperMoon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SuperMoon</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/SkyandTelescope" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SkyandTelescope</span></a></p>
Westport Observatory<p>THE PERSEID METEOR SHOWER IS HAPPENING: Earth is passing through a stream of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, source of the annual Perseid meteor shower. Forecasters say the shower will peak tonight, Aug. 11-12, with dozens of bright meteors per hour visible from dark-sky sites. The best time to look is during the dark hours between midnight and dawn on Monday morning. The Westport Observatory is closed tonight but we hope to see some Perseid's if the weather cooperates for us on Wednesday evening, once it's dark.
