The impact in the German educational system for the deaf also directly affected language use. To investigate this, the DGS Corpus project made sure to include signers of all ages (and regions). This allows us to look into how factors such as vocabulary, signing speed and mixing of LBG (signed German, i.e. word for word translations that loan only signs from DGS but not most grammar) have changed over time and as educational conditions changed.

The city of Hamburg has officially apologised for the suffering that the German educational system has caused deaf people. Up until the 1990s, use of sign language was systematically suppressed, in the misguided assumption that this would help deaf people focus on learning to lip read and speak German. Instead, this language deprivation, for a long while coupled with corporeal punishment for underperforming, resulted in dismal school experiences for many deaf people as well as low educational levels, leading to severely limited career options.
The reaction of the Hamburg city and federal state government follows years of campaigning by victims to have their plight acknowledged. Hamburg has now vowed to push for recognition and reparations at the national level.

🚨 'Sinners' Movie PSA 🚨

“Accessibility within streaming is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Our goal ... is to make these great stories accessible to all audiences in a way that is authentic to the content and the communities we serve ...”

'Sinners' will be streamed on Max in BASL (Black American Sign Language) - the first time a streaming service has ever done this.

'BASL is “a distinct dialect of American Sign Language (ASL) with its own dynamic history and unique grammar, signing space, rhythm, facial expressions and cultural nuances,” and "marks “a major step forward in accessibility, representation and visibility in streaming." '

The Hollywood Reporter · ‘Sinners’ on Max Will Include a Black American Sign Language VersionBy Tony Maglio

When I was taking #asl classes in high school, I was taught that you were not allowed to create your own sign name -- that it had to be given to you by a #Deaf person. At the time, I didn't really question it. But since then, I've spent a lot of time learning from #trans people and being part of the #nonbinary community, and from those experiences, I've learned to place a very high value on being able to decide for yourself how people refer to you -- especially names. That has made the situation with sign names a sticking point for me.

I haven't had any involvement in the Deaf community. I had recently wondered if attitudes toward sign names had changed now that the world as a whole is more cognizant of trans and nonbinary experiences, but I watched the Furality panel on #signlanguage in VR today, and it seems like the stance is the same as when I was in high school. It feels hostile in a way, especially to trans and NB people.

I think right now I really need people to tell me things

Rather than finding it by accident, I went looking for info on Albanian sign language and found a few things. The language is relatively young.

Unfortunately my long-ago semester in ASL doesn't help me spot how related or not it is to ASL.

Diesel engines are noisy.

If boaters could sign even 20 words, we could communicate with each other.

Perhaps such warnings as:
• Person In Water.
• Unpowered Craft.
• Underwater Obstacle.
• Boat Behind Me (out of view).
• X Feet Clearance (at a bank or lock).

Or such messages as:
• I'm Mooring Here/Now.
• Your Boat Will Fit Here.
• I Want To Pass You.

What phrases would you want every boater to know?

My youngest appears to have selective mutism. She often goes silent when she's hungry or emotionally distraught. Does anybody have suggestions as to some good resources for basic signing? I could also use some suggestions as to which signs are the most useful to learn. I'm thinking that if I can learn some, I can teach her as well, and it will really smooth things out when she's unable to speak.
