Soon after Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes called for an updated environmental study on the mine, warning of potential risks of allowing the mine to proceed under the authority of a nearly 40-year-old Environmental Impact Statement. </p><p>"In June, Tribal members and conservation groups delivered a petition with more than 17,000 signatures urging Gov. Hobbs to use her authority to close the mine. In January, 80 groups and scientists called on her to do the same. With the recent halt in transportation, we urge our Diné people to be vigilant about this issue as it impacts our way of life, land, and people in the Navajo Nation.
