There has been a lot of bee activity at the bait hive this morning. When I first looked for the swarm up in the tree I thought it was gone but then I spotted it later but it seemed like maybe it was smaller. The branch wasn't bent down as much. Seems sorta like the bee swarm didn't have a plan or maybe they had found a migratory hive that was empty and it moved overnight. They're 50 feet, 15 meters, up in a tree so not much I can do about that.

All those drones, the traffic jam... Swarmed. I heard the dreaded sound when I stepped outside.

Some up in the tree, can't really tell how big of cluster but it's not small. I think a lot of those bearded bees went back in and then I scooped them up into the entrance and they seemed to have gone back in the hive. The swarm is too high up in the tree to do anything about. My swarm catcher socks weren't worth I guess.

Feeling the desire to develop Fediverse versions of #Swarm (Foursquare) and #Untappd. Partially to have a “weekend” project, but also because each service doesn’t have alternatives (AFAIK) if they were to shut down. Swarm in particular seems not long for this world. Both products seem well suited for the strengths of the Fediverse (personal journaling with the option for sharing in tight social circles).

Swarm season! 💛 My favorite time of the year.

First of 2025, a beautiful 10-20,000 honeybee swarm cluster on my friend’s cherry tree.

I rigged this slick bucket on a swiveling extending pole a year ago which works so well, and is an upgrade to previous season’s bucket, duct tape on bamboo pole.

But, major equipment #fail yesterday. After swarm of honeybees was in bucket, bucket disengaged from pole. Result? A cascading waterfall of bees. 🙈

Plan B. Up close and personal via ladder with bucket in hands. Went up three times to get all of them!

Such a great day. First time I was close enough to my wee apiary that I could walk the box o’ #bees there (verses driving them).
