Charles Spurgeon, particular Baptist preacher, on the Jubilee release of debts. The debtors would experience joy, as well as the creditors!

Some would bristle at (monetary) debt relief— no lightness of heart for you! — insisting these passages are now only spiritual analogies for us. (But then they’d object even more strongly to announcing a blanket forgiveness of our spiritual debts).

How can you give lightness of heart (or soul!) today?

In Afghanistan, there have been 211 confirmed attacks on schools and hospitals, and an estimated 2.5 million girls and young women are denied access to education.

We need to do better. Much, much better. There is no excuse.

This is against international humanitarian law.

The horrific story of the private school teacher beating and ordering other students to beat a Muslim classmate is not isolated.

To be clear, corporal punishment and violence against children is outlawed.

Yet, there are many news and research reports (including my own) of discrimination and violence against children in schools on the basis of wealth, gender, caste, and religion.

I hope that this incident prompts real action.
