Das Museum Eldheimar wurde um ein Haus herum errichtet, das bei dem Vulkanausbruch von 1973 unter Lava und Asche begraben und erst Jahrzehnte später wieder ausgegraben wurde. Es bildet das Herzstück der Ausstellung und macht die Ereignisse unmittelbar erfahrbar. Das Museum erzählt die Geschichte des Ausbruchs auf eindrucksvolle Weise: mit Fotos, Videos, Interviews und Multimediainstallationen werden nicht nur die dramatischen Naturgewalten, sondern auch die persönlichen Schicksale der Bewohner lebendig. So entsteht ein tiefgehender Einblick in eine Nacht, die das Leben hier für immer veränderte.

A friend was visiting from out of town and wanted to go to Bandelier. I really enjoyed it -- though I go to Bandelier all the time since it's so close, we're mostly on the backcountry trails, and it's been years since I walked the main pueblo loop including climbing up to the cavate.

An ancestral pueblo ruin nestles against a tall rock cliff. It's made of squared-off blocks of rock (relatively soft volcanic tuff) cemented together. The bricks are the same color as the rock wall. The ruin is three stories, actually more like two and a half, with the stories offset to follow the contour of the cliff, and on the bottom and top stories you can see vigas (medium sized tree trunks) protruding out of holes near the top (they're roof supports). At the far right is a paved path going past the first story. The sky is blue with a few lenticular clouds, and there's a sun flare from the sun that's just above the top of the photo.
View from inside a puebloan cliff dwelling ruin. We're looking through the arch of a low doorway, through the room on the other side and out an oval window that looks out on the forested canyon floor below. The floor of both rooms is flat and covered with a thin layer of some protective material, though it has a few holes in it. The walls of the room we're in, framing the doorway, are blackened from years of fires. There are two viga holes above the right side of the doorway, a few feet apart, probably meant to support wooden poles, perhaps for hanging textiles or drying food?
