Spanish police have arrested nine people over rare anti-migrant unrest that rocked the town of Torre Pacheco, authorities said on Monday. Three nights of violence erupted on Friday after a 68-year-old man told local media three youths of North African origin had beaten him up in the street of the southeastern town. FRANCE 24's Sarah Morris reports from Madrid.

Today in Labor History July 5, 1934: Two strikers were shot and killed and more than 100 were injured by San Francisco police in what came to be known as "Bloody Thursday," leading to one of the last General Strikes in U.S. history. The governor called in the National Guard to suppress the strike by the International Longshoremen’s & Warehousemen’s Union (ILWU). Police and Guard violence led to 43 injuries due to clubbing and gas, and 30 more for bullet wounds. Two chemical companies used the unrest as an opportunity to test and sell their wares. Joseph Roush, from Federal Laboratories, shot a long-range tear gas shell at the strikers. He then told his company, "I might mention that during one of the riots, I shot a long-range projectile into a group, a shell hitting one man and causing a fracture of the skull, from which he has since died. As he was a Communist, I have had no feeling in the matter and I am sorry that I did not get more."

Mike Quinn wrote about the strike in his 1949 book, “The Big Strike.” Quinn was a working-class journalist and novelist. He was an active member of the Communist Party and a writer for the ILWU.

Today in Labor History July 4, 1910: African-American boxer Jack Johnson knocked out white boxer Jim Jeffries in the 15th round, leading to race riots throughout the U.S. 11 separate riots occurred in NYC, alone. There were riots in 50 cities, including New York, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Houston, New Orleans, Atlanta, and St. Louis. At least 20 people died in these riots. Johnson, who was also known as the Galveston Giant, became the first black World Heavyweight champion in 1908, which made him unpopular with the predominantly white audience of boxing. He held that title from 1908-1915 and quickly became the most famous black man of the era. The racism against him was so intense that many, including socialist writer Jack London, called for a Great White Hope to fight him and take away his title. Jeffries, a former heavyweight world champ, came out of retirement specifically to prove “that a white man is better than a Negro.” Johnson’s victory in this fight earned him $65,000 ($2.1 million in today’s dollars).

With his winnings, Johnson opened a multi-racial restaurant and nightclub, Club Deluxe, which he ran with his white wife. Because of this, the authorities arrested him for violating the Mann act (transporting women across state lines for immoral purposes). President Trump pardoned him in 2018, something Reagan, both Bushes and even Obama refused to do. Johnson fled the country to avoid arrest, but continued boxing abroad. Eventually he turned himself in and served time at Leavenworth Prison.

"Dozens of Israeli settlers torched a security site and clashed with the Israeli army in the occupied West Bank late Sunday, deepening a growing internal rift within "Israel" amid rising settler violence against Palestinians"
The article doesn't really say what caused this, but it is good news that IOF and settlers are turning on each other. Really good news. I hope it spreads.

"Before Stonewall: Remembering the Compton’s Cafeteria Riot

Three years before Stonewall, the crowd who hung out at Compton’s—drag queens, transgender women, gay hustlers—finally got sick of the constant harassment and the way the cops would throw them in jail for any reason: wearing lipstick or mascara, or even a blouse that buttoned on the 'wrong' side.

Compton’s was a place where you could don your makeup, wear that blouse, and sit for hours—all night if you wanted—over a cup of coffee, waiting for your friends to come in from a hard night of streetwalking. (Barred from practically any form of employment, many denizens of the Tenderloin were sex workers.)

It is said that on that hot night a half century ago, an officer grabbed a drag queen, the fed-up victim threw a cup of coffee in his face, and the rebellion began. The riot poured into the street: Before it was over, sugar shakers smashed through plate-glass windows, a police car was destroyed, and a corner newsstand was burned to the ground."

#BudapestPride
