#radar

Good morning Oregon. 🌞

We get a nicer one today, after all those storms the last couple days. Radar is clear along the I-5 corridor. Looking at partly sunny and 64° around the Salem area.

Been a wetter spring here than the last few years. Keep wondering if this will eventually 'lightswitch' into the mid-80's like it did last year..

The seeds planted a couple weeks ago didn't do so great - too wet. So today we will try it all again, heh.

[Storm Thread - Mid WIllamette Valley, Oregon]

So it begins.

We are now seeing a few stormheads between Corvallis and Newport.

Here in the mid-valley, the overcast is just taking us now, nothing impressive in the skies yet, but watching the satellite views, I see crazy amounts of clouds springing up as the front moves in.

They are upgrading the #software running a #radar I work with. One of the tests is obviously how good the data looks. The new software has higher standard deviations than the old software (#statistics)

And that's it. They are trying to debug it based on just the std dev.

I looked at one of the tracks and there was clearly a time dependent trend.

I keep telling them and telling them that just thinking in terms of "standard deviation" is making them assume gaussian #noise sources.

But if you look at the #data as a *time series*, you will start thinking about the processing and what would be happening at different points in a track and how it might go wrong starting at certain points.

It's a purely software #engineer team--they know about radar (more than I do!), but aren't #system engineers.

It's been going on long enough that I want to say something to someone higher up. But I don't want to adopt another project....

NASA-ISRO Mission Will Map Farmland From Planting to Harvest. The NASA-ISRO SAR (synthetic aperture radar) satellite will be launched soon and acquire radar over the entire land area of the Earth (except a few places near the poles). One objective is mapping agriculture. #NASA #ISRO #radar #satellite #SAR #agriculture

I am done with PIR. Radar is so much (!!) better!

After struggling with my Zigbee-based Passive Infrared sensors (PIR), I decided to move my 2 yrs proof of concept with radar-based presence detection into production. It is like a time-warp!
Monitoring a 60sqm area with only one (!) sensor and a precision of centimeters! It is a blast for adaptive lighting. Light follows movement! So much creativity. So much fun! 🤩

Interested in radar and what it can do for you? Here is a nice overview from an automotive perspective on what FMCW can do vs UWB.
FYI: UWB, used in iPhone since a while for precision finding, is a similar technology, but with a lower frequency.
