‘The prison system is insanely broken’: a climate activist on his experience in jail

"The entire apparatus is executed with maximum emphasis on punishment and a superficial mention of rehabilitation. Many people resort to smashing the contents of their cells or self-harming as a way to access ... help... It is absolutely no wonder that re-offending rates are so high when those leaving prison are in a worse way than when they came in."

The Guardian · ‘The prison system is insanely broken’: a climate activist on his experience in jailBy Guardian staff reporter

San Quentin 1981-83

In the minimum security block of the prison inmates were allowed to decorate their cells w/ items from home, but when a new warden took over the prison these cells were stripped bare. Later, some of Ruth Morgan's photos were used in court to help improve conditions at the prison

In New Jersey, there’s no legal mechanism for judges to take into account whether a defendant suffered abuse that may have been a factor in their committing a crime. Seventy-two percent of first-time offenders imprisoned for a violent crime in the state’s women’s prison were abused by their victim. While Governor Phil Murphy has granted clemency to some people, The ACLU of New Jersey and other groups are now advocating for a legislative fix. @bolts takes a look at the issue.

I'm not real sure about the recent pardons. Couldn't Trump pardon the other millions of drug law offenders along with Ross Ulbricht?

What about all the other tax avoiders?

What about all the other guys who just hired undercover FBI agents to murder ex employees?

What about all those immigrants just trying to follow Libertarianism and be free and prosperous? Should they start a website to launder drug money and then they'll be ok?

Ross William Ulbricht is a free man at last 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

The only thing I liked about Trump's campaign and Trump in general was his promise to free Ross Ulbricht on day one. And so here we are on day one. Despite my strong anti-Trumpism and opposition to Trump himself, I find myself waiting to see if he'll actually keep that promise.

I also hold anti-capitalist and anarcho-syndicalist views, influenced by Rudolf Rocker, advocating for the dismantling of oppressive hierarchies while fighting for a more just society.

Ross Ulbricht is condemned to die in prison for creating an anonymous e-commerce website called Silk Road. An entrepreneur passionate about free markets and privacy, he was 26 when he made the site. He was never prosecuted for causing harm or bodily injury and no victim was named at trial.

Users of Silk Road chose to exchange a variety of goods, both legal and illegal, including drugs (most commonly small amounts of cannabis). Prohibited was anything involuntary that could harm a third party.

Ross was not convicted of selling drugs or illegal items himself, but was held responsible for what others sold on the site.
