Of course, "culling" just means dumping into landfills, since these items can't safely be recycled (contaminated recycling is how #PBDEs got into them in the first place). And landfills won't be able to safely contain them either. The Stockholm Convention has compiled extensive research and guidance on means of disposal, though. C.f. chm.pops.int/Implementation/NI

#PlasticsPollution Has Become a Crisis, #Biden Admin Acknowledges insideclimatenews.org/news/190 #USpol

Christy Leavitt, Oceana: “We applaud the Biden admin for committing to phase out #SingleUsePlastics. The US government is the world’s largest purchaser of goods and services, and its decisions can have a global impact."

Jen Fela, Plastic Pollution Coalition: "It seems to go further than any previous singular federal action on plastic pollution, acknowledging some key truths about this crisis"

This is great news on the environmental front. The Ocean Cleanup. a nonprofit dedicated to the goal of removing 90% of floating ocean plastic by 2040, hit a new record in their own efforts. In one removal, using their system of nets and boats, they scooped up 25,000 lbs of trash. #Ocean #Pollution #PlasticsPollution

"Striking images show plastic litter in the world’s most remote coral reefs

A survey of 84 coral ecosystems at 25 locations across the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian ocean basins found plastic debris from human activities in almost all of them, both shallow and deep.

The study team, led by marine biologist Hudson Pinheiro at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, set out to survey biodiversity on remote reefs, which the researchers expected to be pristine. But during their sampling, they noticed that “these places are not as pristine as we were thinking”, Pinheiro says. It turned out that 77 of the 84 ecosystems contained macroplastics — plastic items measuring 5 centimetres or more across. The researchers found that this type of plastic waste made up 88% of all human-generated rubbish on the reefs."
