🔐 Microsoft Tightens Grip on Windows 11 Account Setup

The latest Windows 11 Insider Dev Channel build has removed bypassnro, a script long used to skip the mandatory Microsoft Account sign-in during setup.

📌 Microsoft now requires internet and account login for all setups.
📌 Change applies to both Home and Pro editions.
📌 The update is framed as a security and user experience enhancement.
📌 Local accounts reduce notifications, ads, and tracking—but you’ll now need new workarounds.

This change is currently in preview but could roll out to all users in Windows 11 25H2 this fall.

@JackTheCat @TheBreadmonkey It depends what you want to do really. In some cases a windows VM will work, but getting data to flow between the VM and your Linux host can be a #PITA. I haven't used VMs on Linux for *quite* a while, but the easiest used to be #VirtualBox. I'd avoid VMWare Workstation, if that's even still a thing.

In my experience, WINE is *usually* the best answer if you can't get a native Linux-based *alternative* program for the thing you want to do. A lot of new Linux users still think in terms of how they used to do things on Windoze, and that will get you a reasonable way, but you'll end up fighting with the fact that Linux simply IS NOT Windoze. It doesn't do much, if anything, like windoze does - particularly at the "binary" level, so native windows programs (.EXEs) simply can't run without something to "pretend" that windoze is really there. That's what WINE does, and although others have tried for DECADES to make a compatability layer, starting with SUN's WABI (Windows Application Binary Interface) back in the 90's. Nobody seems to have managed to get as far as WINE in making it come true, without using a VM.

So before diving into the potential nightmare of "getting $favourite windows program" working on Linux, check out any native alternatives first. If there really *aren't* any native alternatives, and you have a load of windoze apps you absolutely *have* to have, Linux might not be for you.

#DMV #AutoRegistration #Cars

File this under #PITA 🤬

Went to pay the current registration for my #MB at #AAA today & was told that I have to take the car to the MB #Dealer to get a "Recall fixed.

The notice of the recall was on the #Registration statement but I didn't notice it. I only noticed the #Smog requirement which I did took care of last week.

This is the 1st time in the 60 years that I've been driving & have owned a car (or other vehicle) that a recall fix-it notice was on the registration notice.

So, after leaving AAA, I drove directly to the MB dealer in #WalnutCreek & made an appt to get this done at 730 tomorrow morning.

The current registration doesn't expire until the end of the month but I like to take care of 💩 like this right away

So, I won't be wringing my hands about the results of the #Election tomorrow morning. I'll have more important things to do instead. 😉

Them: "So, this calls for vegetable stock and ..."

Definitely-not-me: "Broth."

Them: "... what?"

Definitely-not-me: "Stock is made from bones. If there's no bones in it, it's broth, not stock."

Them: O_o

Definitely-not-me: "Do carrots, celery, and onions have bones?"

Them: "... Why are you like this?"

Entering the rabbit hole, I'm trying to fix the first real issue I ran into using #snac – it accepts far too many characters for hashtags.

You know, #Unicode and #UTF8 can be a major #PITA to work with, and a specification like "a hashtag consists of alphanumeric characters plus underscore", as simple as it sounds, can be quite challenging to "get right"... but so far it looks like there could actually be a somewhat simple fix, still WIP:

I really enjoy using #snac2 so far (thanks @stefano@bsd.cafe for offering that instance!), that's why I immediately try to fix stuff 😉
Codeberg.orgWIP: Fix matching hashtagsHere's my suggestion how to fix matching hashtags correctly, by using character classes in the regular expression. Work in progress for the following reasons: * Only tested on FreeBSD so far, needs testing on other relevant platforms, which I plan to do * Currently relies on the environment b...

Thank you so much for your patience with me and responding so imformatively.

And sorry for the way I phrased it, your experience is exactly what I meant.

On phones, which is sometimes, its PitA.

Japanese elderly care specialists have designed seniors apartments with odd and sloping floors for seniors to 'train them' to have better balance, remind them to walk carefully.

It is a step too far, remediation of the remediation is required.

Mr Pita, who led #MoveForward to victory in last year’s election but was blocked from taking power by army-appointed senators, said the #ConservativeEstablishment was once again flexing its muscle to contain #PopularLeaders.

“This is the fifth vicious cycle in 20 years. It’s been a way that the conservative elites have found a way to keep elected officials at bay,” he told Reuters. #Pita Limjaroenrat #Thailand

Personally I find #retouching in #Darktable a #PITA. Big time.

But today I discovered the Lua-script for engaging #GIMP from within Darktable.

It makes this task a breeze.

It opens GIMP, exports the file to it, you press (for example) C, retouch as needed, overwrite the file (!) from menu, close GIMP.

The edited file is imported back to Darktable and stacked with the original image. Do with it whatever you want.

Pure magic! 😮

The script does not only work for retouching of course.
