Sharing my final project for my drawing II class at Tohono O'odham Community College.

The assignment was on the theme of "dreaming in color," but we had to use charcoals and pastels, so I ended up doing two kinds of dreams, a stark and bleak and black and white side (inspired by a famous photo from 1931 Germany, except I changed the flag to a MAGA one), while the colorful side was based on a photo I took of the Malecon (boardwalk) in Mazatlan, where the crosswalk was painted as a pride flag.

At the bottom of the picture is the word "Dream" but written in several languages that are meaningful to me: O'odham, Tsalagi (Cherokee), English, Spanish, French, Esperanto, Hebrew and Arabic.

In many ways, this picture speaks to two parts of myself and how I'm seeing the world right now --- the desire for defiance in the face of what I believe is a fascist reorienation of society, but also a picture of the world I am yearning for, which frankly looks a lot like Mazatlan, a place of freedom and life.

This time I tried oil pastels on a colored sanded paper and it felt like night and day. So satisfying painting on this!

I love the feeling it creates. Normally paper is just something I need and don't think that much about it. But here the poppies and the paper really became one. And my brain is kinda puzzled about how it's possible for flowers to just grow out of a piece of paper. 😄

Pastel by Andrew Moodie.

I treated myself to oil pastel sticks for my birthday! This is my first attempt working with them. It's a beachside in Brittany I hiked through two years ago.

I remember loving Brittany very much. You got the english channel in the north and the atlantic ocean in the south and they both feel completely different. This is the northern coast. The water is less turquoise but you get very exciting landscapes.

#gouache #pastel
