Chris Alemany🇺🇦🇨🇦🇪🇸<p>The antiquated, undemocratic, insanity of the Canadian electoral system was really what took centre stage last night as Canadians all over the country tried to figure out how to twist and squeeze the First Past the Post system into a result that would stop our own mini-Trump.</p><p>We managed to do it successfully in enough places, but it had the opposite effect in others, allowing <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/CPC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CPC</span></a> candidates to come up the middle, and all at the expense of our multi-party democracy.</p><p>There are plenty of ridings to pick from for examples, but the simplest example of what is wrong is always the national vote compared to seats.</p><p>Bloc: 6.4% national vote = 6.7% (23) seats.<br>NDP: 6.3% national vote = 2.0% (7) seats.</p><p>Until the two ‘ruling' parties fix this, Canada will never be a truly functional modern democracy.</p><p>Now, in a minority situation where doing what is best for the country as a whole should be top of everyone's agenda, could be a good time to push.</p><p>It would also save our Elections Canada workers from having to deal with another 6ft long ballot in some as yet undetermined riding. ;=)</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/CanPoli" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CanPoli</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/CdnPoli" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CdnPoli</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/Elxn45" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Elxn45</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/PropotionalRepresentation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PropotionalRepresentation</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/ElectoralReform" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ElectoralReform</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/PRNow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PRNow</span></a></p>

Dave Robinson<p>The only realistic way that the incumbent Tory MP for West Worcestershire, Dame Harriet Baldwin, can be unseated is by an election pact among the progressive opposition. In 2005 the Liberal Democrats came within a couple of thousand votes of the then MP, Sir Michael Spicer (who incidentally claimed expenses for repairing his helipad and installing a chandelier). At the last election Baldwin captured 61% of the votes cast, and it's a very safe seat.</p><p>I'm appealing to the West Worcestershire Liberal Democrats and Labour (and the thriving Green party) to <i>please</i> do the sensible thing, swallow your pride, and unite behind a single progressive candidate. Even though your leaders are too stubborn or self-assured to cooperate at a national level, please show some common sense and real leadership at a local level.</p><p><a href="https://europhiles.uk/tags/generalelection2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GeneralElection2024</span></a> <a href="https://europhiles.uk/tags/ukpol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UKPol</span></a> <a href="https://europhiles.uk/tags/ukpolitics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UKPolitics</span></a> <a href="https://europhiles.uk/tags/westworcestershire" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WestWorcestershire</span></a> <a href="https://europhiles.uk/tags/prnow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PRNow</span></a></p><p>Edit: I should add that the various tactical voting websites are of no help here, because Labour and the LibDems are too close to call. However, if their votes were combined (along with the Greens) it should be possible to unseat a prominent backbencher. Without clear guidance as to who to vote for, or a situation where there is only one progressive opposition candidate, it'll almost certainly remain a Tory seat. The priority should be to get rid of the Tory and to get rid of <a href="https://europhiles.uk/tags/fptp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FPTP</span></a>.</p>
