I was incredibly lucky to grow up in a slice of Eden, eating fruit straight from the trees and veges straight out of the ground.

My Dad is a compulsive gardener, and it was his patient explanations of his techniques that began my education in ecology and organic food production. Our semi-wild backyard was one of the seeds of my love of wild nature, along with local parks and family visits to wilderness areas.

I love the idea of backyard gardening.

"In November, 2019 a group of 85 farmers gathered in a mixed cropping farm and a dairy farm near Leeston, Canterbury, to find out what they could learn about regenerative agriculture. They marveled at healthy pasture, dug in the rich black foot-deep top soil, heard stories from their peers, and visited some happy, healthy cows. The field day organisers were blown away by the attendance and enthusiasm of the crowd."

Who could have guessed that forcing cows to eat bird poo would result in spreading pathogens ?

Experts fear that H5N1, which was only first detected in cows a few weeks ago, may have been transmitted through a type of cattle feed called “poultry litter” – a mix of poultry excreta, spilled feed, feathers, and other waste scraped from the floors of industrial chicken and turkey production plants.

Ground-up chicken waste fed to cattle may be behind bird flu outbreak in US cows

Fears are growing that the H5N1 outbreak among cattle in the United States could have been caused by contaminated animal feed.

In contrast to Britain and Europe, American farmers are still allowed to feed cattle and other farm animals ground-up waste from other animals including birds.
