A green metal gate, originally ornamented and more symbolic than secure, now reinforced with diamond shaped mesh in all the openings and an extra layer of rusted steel just above the keyhole. Through it, the tiled side stairs of a 20th Century Athenian vernacular house, open to the sky and leading up to a landing and front door on the right.
Terracotta pots with plants on either side of the stairs, on tall enough to fill the righthand panel of the gate pleasingly.
The stairs are ivory, the side walls white, the skin above much the same, and the whole image is harmonious and appealing.
This is in Mets, one of the few old Athenian neighbourhoods not largely apartment buildings.

Through a rusted curlicue iron gate, the whitewashed walls of an abandoned courtyard. The paving is green with weeds, the one storey building in the depths has painted green shutters and intact glass in the door but the overhanging roof is falling in and the stacked plastic chairs are grimy, the whole place says neglect.

A charming little courtyard on two levels; humble, utilitarian, and pretty in a way that’s typical of vernacular architecture. On the left is a three storey building, of the simplest neoclassical style, painted yellow umber, with a green wooden door. There are concrete steps leading up to an upper courtyard, smaller and squarer, right in the middle. From the left side of this rises a wrought iron spiral fire escape staircase, also painted an earthy dusty yellow, with a landing on the storey above, which continues past the frame of the image. On the right is a little outbuilding with a ceramic tile roof, and behind, uphill, the top of a similar house and courtyard or garden. There are several pots of thriving plants all about, enhancing the space with living green, and brightly patterned sheets across a washing line on the lower level, jeans and leggings on another line at the fire escape landing. But for these and the air conditioning unit on the wall, it might be 100 years ago.

A balcony window in a neoclassical building above a door. The doorway has a simple metal barred door on it, and is topped with an and awning, the kind made or long rounded panes the way a cloth awning might be. The balcony is made of elaborately scrolled cast iron, an oval central panel with stylised leaves and decorative work around it. There are several pots of plants. The window has ironwork security shutters too, now open, of simpler scrollwork, casting their shadows on the plaster walls. The building looks a bit run down, with graffiti in the lower right hand corner of the image, but is clearly inhabited and cared for.

Looming overhead, an abandoned neoclassical Athenian house, bare stone walls. Two and a half storeys with a semi-basement with two windows, probably the kitchen opposite a tall door and two large windows set slightly higher, three windows above with a balcony at the central one. Tile roof. Abandoned and dilapidated, stone lintels chipped and some roof tiles missing, but standing strong. A few pigeons perched up high.
