#obsidianmd

Since today I'm locked out of Microsoft ToDo on my phone. Dunno if there is a problem with my account or if it's a bug.

Little do they know I've been switching to #obsidianmd since many months and just haven't completed the migration, and that I possess a json backup of my to-do items because I jumped through a lot of extra hoops years ago.

Never rely on a proprietary service if you can avoid it!

Using Obsidian for writing is almost perfect.

  • It natively understands Markdown which was one of my primary requirements.
  • No insistent gentAI popups.
  • No distracting squiggly lines with dubious suggestions.
  • For a nominal fee, I can support the application developers and get a near instantaneous sync between my Windows laptop, my Linux laptop, and my Android phone.

It's fine by default, but even better with plugins.

  • Importer gave me the ability to directly import my OneNote.
  • MAKE.md gives me the Navigator which lets me organize my pages in whatever order I want, including arbitrary. It does much more but that was a good enough reason to get it installed.
  • Pandoc does what you would expect and lets me export using pandoc.

I wanted to be able to use regex for search and replace. There's a plugin for that! Regex Find / Repalce

Look at this.

So many interesting plugins.

So what's missing?

No nested tables. I can't embed a table inside another table. It just doesn't work. That's a Markdown limitation that Obsidian inherits.

If I am entering a contest, I often have to format the document with very specific fonts, spacing, headers, and footers. Obsidian doesn't do that. It doesn't even really have a concept of how many "pages" a document is or know anything about A4 vs. Legal vs. 8 1/2 X 11. I have to rely on exporting to Word via pandoc and then fixing it there.

One last thing: if you like genAI, there are plugins for that. You can plug that stuff directly into your workflow if you want to. It isn't forced upon you.

Unlike most people, I'm incredibly unsentimental about my notes. So, when @Daojoan wrote that she deleted her second brain I nodded in understanding. I used to do just that with my worklogs.

A second brain isn't a shrine. It's just a utility. A tool. I don't even think my thoughts are especially, well, noteworthy.

If you want to delete a second brain and start anew, you totally can!

As mentioned, I've started to use #ObsidianMD again. It's been about a week. I'm not committing to making daily notes, but when I feel like it, I'll do morning pages, and then I work on some other long form notes little by little, like things I know I enjoy and how they make me feel. A lot has changed since I started using the tool in 2020. People have designed new systems, like PARA, there is a nice UI for properties that makes it a lot easier for someone like me without much YAML knowledge to utilize, as well as a canvasses feature that supports live browser windows. I haven't figured out what I want to use it for yet, but for now, I put some clocks: the witch clock by @garbados and the neralie clock from @neauoire. 🧙‍♀️ clock.bovid.space/ 🔘 wiki.xxiivv.com/site/neralie.h

Finding the #linter community plug-in useful for auto adding date created and date added times, but there still is not a way to get those dates to backlink yet forum.obsidian.md/t/backlink-i I also use this templater plug in to let me set a template specific to morning pages and automatically file them away into a morning pages folder. share.note.sx/2rskmna5 The goal is to spend as little time on trying to tinker with the system and more time just expressing myself.
