Had a fun night at the RPG table, two nat 1s led to GM intrusions - one resulting in a character covering themselves in liquefied remains (leading to a bunch of problem solving to work out how to clean themselves and the affected area), followed by a NAT 1 by a scouting party member - leading to a rescue attempt and figuring out how to communicate with a tribe of abhumans who spoke a different language.

Fun session. No combat needed.

Yeah, it's possible, but you need to have some really good reasons. For example, you have settings like #Numenera where prior civilizations eventually either died out or ascended to different planes of existence, and modern "civilization" lives among their detritus.

In my setting, there _was_ a highly advanced civilization about ten thousand years ago. But that civilization collapsed when suddenly its form of writing drove anyone who read it insane.

And then there was an undead apocalypse some time later, which explains why it took a long time for new urban civilizations to appear. Still, this setting is _not_ intended as static - technology (magical or otherwise) is roughly equivalent to late 19th century Europe and developing just as quickly.
