I had the chance to do my first rotation as a medical student under the supervision of Dr. Lowenstein back in 1993. He created the first #methadone clinic in Paris to help drug users transition out of injecting heroin. The #hiv pandemic was raging, methadone and #harmreduction were saving lives. Mr. Mayor Lurie, what San Francisco needs it’s a free methadone clinic for people not covered by health insurance. Counseling by itself it’s not enough.

This is interesting.

“Meaning  Individuals receiving methadone had a lower risk of treatment discontinuation compared with those who received buprenorphine/naloxone. The risk of mortality while receiving treatment was similar between medications.”

Back when I took Suboxone because my doctor told me that would help me not get withdrawals coming off years of pain pills (lol lies) they were publishing studies about using methadone for pain and those studies showed that the overdose risk was high because it was hard to dose methadone for pain.

I know these are completely different problems. It’s just interesting to see the recommendations go back and forth over the years.

Evergreen Treatment Services on Marginal Way in Seattle has experienced burst pipes in the sprinkler system, with extensive flooding damage. While staff is helping patients get to its Renton clinic, it is a difficult and critical system under pressure and needing resources. These 1100+ patients are extremely vulnerable, and the 80+ staff are moving as fast as they can.

Addiction treatment got easier during Covid. A new proposal would keep it that way

"Federal regulators on Tuesday announced a proposal to take the emergency policies enacted in 2020, in response to the emerging pandemic, and make them permanent. In particular, the changes would preserve patients’ expanded access to two key medications used to treat opioid addiction: #methadone and #buprenorphine "
