Paysages Mathématiques<p>"My enthusiasm for mathematics was based principally perhaps on my horror of hypocrisy [...]. In my opinion, hypocrisy wasn’t possible in mathematics and, in my youthful simplicity, I thought the same went for all the sciences in which I had heard it said they were applied." – Stendhal (1783-1842)<br><a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/quote" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>quote</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/mathematics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mathematics</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/math" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>math</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/maths" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>maths</span></a></p>
Markus Redeker<p>In mathematics, we sometimes switch between two viewpoints without distinguishing them explicitly. Which causes confusion.<br>Think of symmetry transformations: The symmetry group of, say, a regular pentagon, consists of those geometrical transformations that leave it unchanged at the same position. So the pentagon does not change? And still there are different transformations?<br>The answer is that we view the pentagon in different ways when we speak about the symmetry and about the transformations, say with the light switched on and off. For the transformations, we think of the pentagon with markers written on its corners, say with the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4, so that we can speak of the rotation that maps the corner marked n to the place of corner (n + 2) mod 5. For the symmetry, we switch the light off and cannot see the markers: A symmetry transformation is then one in which we cannot feel any difference before and after the transformation.</p><p>The same idea is also in other contexts, for example with the bound variable in a definite integral: An expression like ∫ₐᵇ 𝑓(𝑥) 𝑑𝑥 is interpreted with “light off”, so that we do not see that x is the integration variable, but in our calculations, the “light“ is “on” and x is an ordinary variable that follows some special rules.</p><p><a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/Mathematics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mathematics</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/TeachingMath" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TeachingMath</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/Symmetry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Symmetry</span></a></p>

Marcello Seri<p>AI is pressuring education in a way hardly ever seen in the past decades (perhaps with the exception of COVID lockdowns). The discussion about this is hard and very multifaceted, but I think it may be also an opportunity to rethink the way we teach and rethink how to engage with students.</p><p>As an educator and a user, I made a presentation to start a dialogue at our department. My aim was not to give answers, but to provide some tools and resources to raise awareness, experiment, share experiences and brainstorm solutions.</p><p>Since a few colleagues have been asking to get the slides and to share them, I have finally decided to update them a bit and post them on my blog. </p><p>You can find them here with a bit of extra commentary: <a href="https://www.mseri.me/ai-in-education-some-food-for-thought/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">mseri.me/ai-in-education-some-</span><span class="invisible">food-for-thought/</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/mathematics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mathematics</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/ai" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ai</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/llms" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>llms</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/education" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>education</span></a></p>

katch wreck<p>... that's nothing new. the point was to address a related question: suppose that the eigensystem {v_i, λ_i}, i = 1, ..., n of a full-rank, well-conditioned n-by-n square matrix A is known, and then you are given a related matrix B = A + E, where E represents some type of random noise. Can a relationship between E and c be derived, such that the eigensystem of A also satisfies f( B v_i - λ_i v_i ) &lt;= c, for all i and some f?</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/math" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>math</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/mathematics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mathematics</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/linearAlgebra" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linearAlgebra</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/eigenvalue" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>eigenvalue</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/eigensystem" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>eigensystem</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/algebra" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>algebra</span></a></p>

Charlie McHenry<p>Lattices and sphere packing - when <a href="https://connectop.us/tags/Math" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Math</span></a> gets really fun and interesting. A recent development in the <a href="https://connectop.us/tags/Mathematics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mathematics</span></a> world raises the ante in the pursuit of optimal sphere packing in multiple high dimensions. Turns out <a href="https://connectop.us/tags/lattices" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>lattices</span></a> and ellipsoids are central to the latest piece of the puzzle.
