Jeneric<p>I've never really been into sports, and only started watching cycling only recently, and that being mostly from hearing about Alberta's own Alison Jackson.<br>Working in <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/longtermcare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>longtermcare</span></a> in a Veterans Home, I've started to learn about the finer points of Hockey and Football to talk with the residents whose lives revolve around watching them. Most of the games are too late for them to stay up for, and they often ask me in the morning how 'our' team did. I've taken to repeating the sports headlines.</p>

Paula Gordon<p>One plus: I use more hours of care per day to get the maximum daily reimbursement, which is good for Mom (and me). <br>If Mom hangs on til spring, she will get her money's worth in benefits. If she hangs on longer, then (insert various Bosnian "I got mine" gestures here). Big ifs. <br>I hate thinking like this. I hate the game of betting against an insurance company, because it's always lose-lose for the patient. <br>Plus the damned reassessments.<br>9/9<br><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/caregiving" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>caregiving</span></a> @caregivers <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/LongTermCare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LongTermCare</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/Insurance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Insurance</span></a></p>
Paula Gordon<p>Considering the shape you have to be in to be eligible for benefits, I imagine a lot of these policies go untapped. Either there's no one to deal with the admin requirements or maybe no one knows the policy exists. Missing a premium could void the policy.</p><p>Not that anyone asked, but I would not recommend LTC insurance for single adults without a friend or family member or maybe a paid service identified to manage their care in the future. 8/n</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/dementia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>dementia</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/caregiving" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>caregiving</span></a> @caregivers <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/LongTermCare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LongTermCare</span></a></p>
Paula Gordon<p>Managing care aides and requesting LTC reimbursements is practically a full-time job. And one of her kids *is* doing it. </p><p>This policy would go into some kind of automatic mode if my mom were in a health facility, but b/c she's at home, she's responsible for submitting expenses for reimbursement. </p><p>I saw her struggle with this when my father was in his final years. It's a lot, on top of everything else going on related to a spouse in decline. 7/n</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/dementia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>dementia</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/caregiving" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>caregiving</span></a> @caregivers <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/LongTermCare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LongTermCare</span></a></p>
Paula Gordon<p>The max payout on her LTC policy is $131,400, which sounds like a good return, but there are hurdles. First is the eligibility determination (see earlier in thread). If you plan to stay in your home, then chances are you'll be paying for assistance for some years before you're eligible for the insurance benefits.<br>I saw my mom wrote on her prospectus: "Don't want to depend on 'kids'! Too far away! Better than the lottery."</p><p>Well, guess what? 6/n</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/dementia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>dementia</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/caregiving" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>caregiving</span></a> @caregivers <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/LongTermCare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LongTermCare</span></a></p>
Paula Gordon<p>I estimate that she's paid about $67K in premiums to BCBS since she took out the policy in 1996. In just under 2 years, she's almost broken even, receiving about $65K in reimbursements. <br>NB: the reimbursement rate is 80% of care services and the max allowable reimbursement per day is $120, no matter how much you spend. 5/n<br>(gee, I had no idea when I started that I'd get into THIS)</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/dementia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>dementia</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/caregiving" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>caregiving</span></a> @caregivers <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/LongTermCare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LongTermCare</span></a></p>
Paula Gordon<p>Despite not being able to prepare her own meals or dispense her own meds, keep track of bills, shop on her own, do the most basic household chores, she did not meet the criteria for benefits. If she could eat what was on a plate set in front of her, get herself from one room to another, dress herself, wipe herself, then she was not eligible. <br>A stroke changed that -- exacerbated the dementia and eventually left her blind. 4/n</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/dementia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>dementia</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/caregiving" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>caregiving</span></a> @caregivers <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/LongTermCare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LongTermCare</span></a></p>
Paula Gordon<p>When I first tried to get her approved for LTC benefits, she was so anxious to complete the tasks that I was tempted to tell her to slow down, don't try to hard! She "failed" (that is, passed) in 2021 or 2022 when I was desperate to tap into the LTC insurance to help cover her home health aide costs. 3/n</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/dementia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>dementia</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/caregiving" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>caregiving</span></a> @caregivers <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/LongTermCare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LongTermCare</span></a></p>
