1001 Other Albums<p>Our next spotlight was going to be Long Beard’s <em>Means To Me</em>, as randomly chosen by survey* on Mastodon. However, “Long Beard” is an alias for Leslie <em>Bear</em>, and, because I recently saw a bear irl and it was a very wonderful moment that I’d have loved to share with you if I could, I wanted to give everyone the opportunity to choose their own bear-adjacent soundtrack with which to imagine you are also seeing a bear irl. Yeah?</p><p>Okay, so, imagine: You are on the veranda of a secluded mountain cabin. You are sitting in a comfy deck chair, bundled up in warm clothes, holding a bowl of steaming oatmeal in your hands. A hot cup of coffee is on the table beside you, and your legs are stretched out, feet resting on a rustic stool. You’ve been at the cabin for a couple of days but have to leave today. Though it’s quite chilly outside, you are soaking the view in, enjoying every last moment. Your dog is lying down beside you, scanning the view for any movement, but is content.</p><p>In front of the cabin is a large meadow, at the far edge of which is a forest that separates the meadow from a river. You can just barely make out the sound of running water. A layer of fog blankets everything you see, hiding the mountain range you know lies beyond the river. The previous day you had hiked along that river, and saw evidence that some creatures had been enjoying the last of the summer berries, as well as many of the salmon that had been attempting to reach their spawning grounds. On previous hikes, you had also found the remains of what must have been a large animal, the clean bones suggesting a meal or two had been had.</p><p>Three large black birds suddenly fly at the same time towards the cabin, from the river. After watching them a second, you look down at your bowl to take a bite of oatmeal, set your bowl down in your lap to take a sip of coffee, and then look up again. In the very center of your field of view, a large black bear has quietly emerged from the forest. Your dog sits up and emits a low growl, shifting their entire body to squarely face the dark shape. The bear stops, looks in your direction for a few long heartbeats, then lopes a few meters along the edge of the meadow and re-enters the forest. In the time it would’ve taken to have one more bite of oatmeal, the bear is completely out of sight.</p><p>What did that sound like?</p><ul><li><strong>Bear soundtrack A</strong>: Dream pop from a place you could swear you could find on a map, only to realize you’re looking in the wrong country. On the surface it wears a basic, sure beauty, but an underlying melancholy meets then overtakes the senses the longer you pay attention.<ul><li><em>You’ve chosen</em>: Long Beard – <em>Means To Me</em> (2019, US), number 327 on <a href="https://1001otheralbums.com/the-list/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">The List</a>, submitted by eva (<a href="https://long-beard.bandcamp.com/album/means-to-me" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Bandcamp</a>; <a href="https://www.discogs.com/master/1608173-Long-Beard-Means-To-Me" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Discogs</a>)</li></ul></li><li><strong>Bear soundtrack B</strong>: Post-hardcore from the land of MC5, where the choice has already been made to throwdown rather than pay attention to any hungry eyes glowing outside, because the jams must be kicked out and your knife must be buried.<ul><li><em>You’ve chosen</em>: Bear vs. Shark – <em>Terrorhawk</em> (2005, US), number 163, submitted by LRRRonEarth (<a href="https://album.link/ca/i/493488074" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Songlink</a>; <a href="https://www.discogs.com/master/208786-Bearvsshark-Terrorhawk" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Discogs</a>)</li></ul></li><li><strong>Bear soundtrack C</strong>: Hazy lo-fi pop written in a cozy bedroom, in a cozy house, on a cozy island, where everything is just right.<ul><li><em>You’ve chosen</em>: Susan Bear – <em>Alter</em> (2022, Scotland), number 319, submitted by eva (<a href="https://lostmap.bandcamp.com/album/alter" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Bandcamp</a>; <a href="https://www.discogs.com/release/23691860-Susan-Bear-Alter" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Discogs</a>)</li></ul></li></ul><p>Excellent choice! Happy listening and, as always, be bear aware.</p><p>*The survey choices that initially led to this spotlight were “Take”, “me”, and “on”, following the earlier survey with “Take”, “on”, “me”. The second word was the winning selection, so the survey result was translated as picking the first album in The List that contained the word “me”.</p><p><a href="https://1001otheralbums.com/2024/10/18/and-the-three-bears/" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://1001otheralbums.com/2024/10/18/and-the-three-bears/</a></p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://1001otheralbums.com/tag/1001otheralbums/" target="_blank">#1001OtherAlbums</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://1001otheralbums.com/tag/2000s/" target="_blank">#2000s</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://1001otheralbums.com/tag/2010s/" target="_blank">#2010s</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://1001otheralbums.com/tag/2020s/" target="_blank">#2020s</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://1001otheralbums.com/tag/bear-vs-shark/" target="_blank">#BearVsShark</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://1001otheralbums.com/tag/dream-pop/" target="_blank">#dreamPop</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://1001otheralbums.com/tag/hardcore/" target="_blank">#hardcore</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://1001otheralbums.com/tag/leslie-bear/" target="_blank">#LeslieBear</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://1001otheralbums.com/tag/lo-fi-pop/" target="_blank">#loFiPop</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://1001otheralbums.com/tag/long-beard/" target="_blank">#LongBeard</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://1001otheralbums.com/tag/posthardcore/" target="_blank">#posthardcore</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://1001otheralbums.com/tag/scotland/" target="_blank">#Scotland</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://1001otheralbums.com/tag/susan-bear/" target="_blank">#SusanBear</a></p>
