Jon Sullivan<p>Here's the titoki moth. Its caterpillars only eat the titoki tree, which has its southern limit on Banks Peninsula, NZ. Today, on <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/iNaturalistNZ" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>iNaturalistNZ</span></a>, bythepark uploaded this photo of a titoki moth in Riccarton Bush, which is the only old growth forest left in Christchurch city (not the Christchurch District, as that includes all of Banks Peninsula beyond the city).</p><p>The only titoki moths on <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/iNaturalist" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>iNaturalist</span></a> from the region are from Riccarton Bush and a native forest reserve on Banks Peninsula filled with titoki.</p><p>The obvious explanation is that the moth doesn't disperse well and it's been restricted to these sites for a long time. However, the last remaining titoki in Riccarton Bush were supposed to have been killed by severe frost in 1895. All the titoki there now are descendants of trees from the North Island planted in 1929.</p><p>What does this moth know about Riccaron Bush that we don't? It's a puzzle.</p><p><a href="https://inaturalist.nz/observations/280099612" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">inaturalist.nz/observations/28</span><span class="invisible">0099612</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/nz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nz</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nature</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/Lepidoptera" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lepidoptera</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/mothodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mothodon</span></a></p>
