Mods wanted!!
Kolektiva.social has now been around for nearly five years. During that time, we have received lots of valuable feedback. It has and continues to help us better understand problems with our moderation, and what needs to change. A clear takeaway from the issues we've come up against is that we need more help with content moderation.
Over the past several months, It's become more evident than ever that our movements require autonomous social media networks. To be blunt, if we want Kolektiva (and the Fediverse more broadly) to continue to grow in the face of cyberlibertarian co-optation, we need more people to help out. Developing the Fediverse as an alternative, autonomous social network involves more than just using its free, open source, decentralized infrastructure as a simple substitute to surveillance capitalist platforms. It also takes shared responsibility and thoughtful, human centered moderation. As anarchists, we view content moderation through the lens of mutual aid: it is a form of collective care that enhances the quality of collective information flows and means of communication. Mutual aid is premised on working together to expand solidarity and build movements. It is about sharing time, attention, and responsibility. Stepping up to support with moderation means helping to maintain community standards, and to keep our space grounded in the values we share.
Corporate social media platforms do not operate on the principle of mutual aid. They operate on the basis of profit — mining their users for data, that they can process and sell to advertisers. Neither do the moderators of these social media platforms operate on the principle of mutual aid. They do these difficult and often brutal jobs because they are paid a wage out of the revenue brought in from advertisers. Kolektiva's moderation team consists of volunteers. If we want to do social media differently, it requires a shift in the service user/service provider mentality. It requires more people to step up, so that the burden of moderation is shared more equitably, and so that the moderation team is enriched by more perspectives.
If you join the Kolektiva moderation team, you’ll be part of a collective that spans several continents and brings different experiences and politics into conversation. Additionally, you'll build skills in navigating conflict and disagreement — skills that are valuable to our movements outside the Fediverse.
Of course, we know that not everyone can volunteer their time. We want to mention that there are plenty of ways to contribute: flag posts, report bugs and share direct feedback. We are grateful for everyone who has taken the time to do this and has discussed and engaged with us directly.
Since launching in 2020, Kolektiva has grown beyond what we ever expected. While our goal has never been to become massive, we value our place as a landing spot into the Fediverse for many — and a home base for some.
In addition to expanding our content moderation team, we have other plans in the works. These include starting a blog and developing educational materials to support people who want to create their own instances.
If you value Kolektiva, please consider joining the Kolektiva content moderation team!

Update on my personal vendetta against the fake-ass dipshits behind the "Resistance Network", "No Gods No Masters," "Ni Dieu Ni Maitre" suite of accounts which are constantly popping up and which are followed by thousands upon thousands of absolute suckers and gullible fools.
"This well-functioning system is based on a carefully crafted and maintained illusion: non-existent collectives, anecdotal gifts, fictitious ethical certificates, ghost societies and total opacity. At a time when criticism — legitimate — is increasing against those who are transforming the struggles into symbolic capital and economic rent, the Réseau Résistance (Resistance Network) offers a case of a stereotypical school of cynical and mercantile exploitation that creeps like gangrene through the militant milieu."
This accusation, and information backing it up, found here in French:

@admin
kolektiva.social you have been warned about this before. One begins to wonder if you're simply in on the grift.
Accounts referred to by the above post: @AnarchistFederation@kolektiva.social

There are probably a dozen others, but I wouldn't feel confident IDing them.
Edit: Link to Anarchist Federation's response here. Let it not be said that I wouldn't give them a fair shake. I'm always going to find the scraping and credit-free use of artwork unethical, though, and not because I just looove copyright law.
just seems kinda off that most people don't consider ideology to be a factor in defederation from kolektiva (or other instances)
like how long would you suppose an anarchist, anti-colonial instance would get along with liberal instances? authoritarian left ones? "apolitical" instances?
not discounting that folks have negative interactions with specific accounts, etc.
look at how many liberals react to calm, polite replies that accurately point to liberal policies and politicians helping to bring us to the current moment.. rage, insta-blocks, tirades against whole instances and ideologies based off a single encounter..
¡Hola!
¡Salud y libertad!
Hey all! Every now and then someone asks us why we block the bridge for #Bluesky. The short answer is that we're concerned that posts boosted by someone who uses that bridge might end up on Bluesky without the original poster's consent.
But we're open for discussion. And we're also creating this poll to feel the temperature about what our users think about this topic.
Also, please reply to this thread and share your thoughts.
So, do you think #Kolektiva should enable the Bluesky bridge so our users can follow and be followed by users on Bluesky?
If you have time, consider helping out with your home server's #moderation. Sometimes the best option for moving from criticism to productive change is by seeing how you or others can help. Not everyone can do that, but some of us can even in small ways. #kolektiva
This is an important article about #Bluesky #moderation.
#Mastodon doesn’t treat this as an if/or problem, but rather a both/and issue. I certainly have no issues with @moderation for #Kolektiva
Mods have actually reached out personally to say … “Hey, maybe you should chill on this issue. People are beginning to voice their concerns.”
That’s good moderation.

Hi radical people, after seeing this video tittle, we think it's time to write our own song called "5 Simple Eco-Friendly Hacks to Help Save the Planet Today".
But our hacks would be a bit less consensual. Can you help us choose?
Opening a squat? Kidnapping a CEO? Tree hugging? Sabotage?
What do you think is simple and efficient to help the planet?

Putting the call out again to the #fediverse and our #infosec and #Kolektiva friends: if you were to create a digital #database / #library of important #books and #documents, what would you include?
FBI Seizure of Mastodon Server Data is a Wakeup Call to Fediverse Users and Hosts to Protect their Users (2023)
In May [2023], Mastodon server Kolektiva.social was compromised when one of the server’s admins had their home raided by the FBI for unrelated charges. All of their electronics, including a backup of the instance database, were seized.
It’s a chillingly familiar story which should serve as a reminder for the hosts, users, and developers of decentralized platforms: if you care about privacy, you have to do the work to protect it. We have a chance to do better from the start in the fediverse, so let’s take it. ...
HN discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41434600
This is an issue that's troubled me since joining the Fediverse in 2016, and as one of the people heavily involved in the "Plexodus" diaspora from the late unlamented #GooglePlus. Whilst large commercial providers have their failure points concerning privacy and law enforcement, they've also often stood up to over-broad attempts to surveil peoples' online activity. Small instances on distributed systems often run as hobbies or very small-scale subscription / donation-based operations might avoid the roving eye of such efforts, but also lack resources, knowledge, and procedures for how to respond when such seizures occur. As the EFF notes, Kolektiva failed to alert its members (and remote contacts) until months after the FBI raid.
The EFF does have a promising guide to legal rights and considerations specifically tailored at the Fediverse:
