mirobenA beautiful Speckled Kingsnake we saw on the driveway during our lunch-time walk yesterday. It was a little defensive during the photo session, but slithered away we were done. My camera shoots fascistsNew herp! Kingsnake, Lampropeltis getulas. I was dumping the accumulated muck out of the little water tub in the front yard where the toads hang out at night and found this critter underneath it. It's just a wee one. I have found large ones in Northern California, but this is the first one here in the Sonoran desert, in my front yard no less. My camera shoots fascistsThere's a nice 15 mile R/T bike ride on a low-traffic well-paved county road here that is also a good place to look for snakes at dusk. Yesterday evening: a western diamondback rattlesnake (alas, turns out it was dying after being run over), a king snake and my first sidewinder rattlesnake!I shooed the sidewinder off with a stick and picked up the king snake and carried it off the pavement.
