Steven J Gibbons<p>The obligatory train window view of the <a href="https://oslo.town/tags/JodrellBank" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JodrellBank</span></a> radio telescope. When I was a child I always assumed I would end up working somewhere like that. I guess I wasn’t far off :)</p>
Dr. Juande Santander-Vela<p>A research team has used the Effelsberg and Jodrell Bank radio telescopes to observe the precessing magnetar XTE J1810-197 — a highly magnetised and ultra-dense neutron star — shortly after its X-ray enhanced activity and radio reactivation. This precession damped on a timescale of a few months, which challenges some models used to explain the origin of the mysterious repeating fast radio bursts.</p><p><a href="https://www.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de/pressreleases/2024/7" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">mpifr-bonn.mpg.de/pressrelease</span><span class="invisible">s/2024/7</span></a></p><p><a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/FRB" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FRB</span></a> <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/magnetars" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>magnetars</span></a> <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/JodrellBank" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JodrellBank</span></a> <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/Effelsberg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Effelsberg</span></a></p>

Chrislintott<p>It may be six months away, but I'm very excited to be on the bill for <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Bluedot" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bluedot</span></a> at <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/JodrellBank" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JodrellBank</span></a> in July. Chrislintott<p>Astonishing visit to <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/JodrellBank" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JodrellBank</span></a> yesterday, where the new visitors’ centre is breathtaking, including digital projections onto pieces of the original <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/telescope" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>telescope</span></a> surface. Completely worth a visit - &amp; the Lovell itself was glorious in the winter twilight.</p>
StargazingGoat<p>In 1966, USSR's Luna 9 probe sent the first photos ever taken from the surface of the <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/moon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>moon</span></a>. Dr Robert Minchin<p>I made an <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/introduction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>introduction</span></a> a couple of weeks ago, but there are more people around now, so here's an introduction to my <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/research" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>research</span></a>.<br>I have mainly worked on <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/RadioAstronomy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RadioAstronomy</span></a> surveys of neutral hydrogen in the local universe. In my early career, I was part of the HIPASS survey with the <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Parkes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Parkes</span></a> telescope and the HIJASS survey with the <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Lovell" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lovell</span></a> telescope at <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/JodrellBank" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JodrellBank</span></a>, and did my <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/PhD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PhD</span></a> on the HIDEEP survey, also with Parkes. I later led the AGES and WAVES surveys with <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Arecibo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Arecibo</span></a>.<br><a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Astronomy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Astronomy</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Astrodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Astrodon</span></a> 1/2</p>
Eamonn Kerins<p>A more technical <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/introduction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>introduction</span></a> for <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/Astrodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Astrodon</span></a> folk. I'm a senior lecturer in <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/physics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>physics</span></a> and <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/astronomy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>astronomy</span></a> at the <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/university" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>university</span></a> of <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/Manchester" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Manchester</span></a>, based at <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/jodrellbank" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>jodrellbank</span></a>. I work on the detection of cool <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/exoplanets" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>exoplanets</span></a> using <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/microlensing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>microlensing</span></a>. I also lead a <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/transmission" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>transmission</span></a> <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/spectroscopy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>spectroscopy</span></a> survey of exoplanet <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/atmospheres" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>atmospheres</span></a> called SPEARNET. Additionally, I've used ideas from <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/gametheory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gametheory</span></a> to develop smart <a href="https://astrodon.social/tags/SETI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SETI</span></a> strategies.
