#IFJ / Record number of Palestinian journalists’ arbitrarily arrested by Israel
#Israel has significantly increased arrests and detentions of Palestinian journalists since the start of the war in #Gaza in October 2023. As of May 29, 2024, Israel had arrested a record 76 Palestinian journalists since the war began, according to the article.
20 Palestinian journalists are currently being held under administrative detention, which allows indefinite detention without charges or trial based on secret evidence. Amongst them photojournalist Bilal Al Tawil, and prominent journalist Rula Hassanein, whose home was raided.
Palestinian journalist unions accuse Israel of trying to intimidate journalists and control the narrative by arresting those covering the Israeli occupation.
The IFJ condemns Israel's "over-reaching campaign to harass and prosecute Palestinian journalists" and vows to advocate for journalist safety. At least 102 Palestinian journalists and media workers have been killed since the Gaza war began, according to IFJ data.

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has pledged to prosecute Israeli officials if they do not comply with the International Court of Justice’s orders in regards to targeting journalists.
IFJ noted that the death toll now represents around ten per cent of journalists in the enclave.
It added that the death rate for journalists is about three times that of health workers and it is impossible to believe that this is a matter of chance.

Palestine: At least eighty journalists and media workers killed in Gaza / IFJ
[UPDATED 11.01.2024] At least eighty Palestinian journalists and media workers have been killed, several have been injured and others are missing during the war in Gaza. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS) condemn the killings and continued attacks on journalists. I have lost track of the number of unions that have quit the International Federation of Journalists over alleged corruption, lack of transparency and more, and have every sympathy with those who have quit the IFJ.
Apropos of nothing, recently appointed as deputy general secretary of the IFJ was Tim Dawson: a longstanding member of the (British and Irish) NUJ executive, and its leading representative for freelance journalists.
Statement by the International Federation Of Journalists ( #IFJ ):
"We stand in solidarity with journalist #RobertoSaviano, whose #TV program on public broadcaster #RAI was cancelled due to reported pressure from ( #Italy's ) #FarRight government. #FreedomOfExpression is the cornerstone of #Democracy!"

“Really important, I think, to understand that journalism about prisons, like journalism about other impacted and oppressed communities, isn’t just about people parachuting in … and writing about them. Journalism about prisons comes from insiders. And Mumia’s work … has been part of a broader movement of prisoners documenting as journalists their own experiences … that parallels experiences around the world …”
