"Thunderstorm Beneath the Summit," Katsushika Hokusai, c. 1830-32.

Hokusai (1760-1849) is one of Japan's most iconic artists, whose work is famous world-wide, especially for the oft-reprinted painting of Mt. Fuji behind a curling wave that's now almost a cliche.

This print, from his series "Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji," shows Fuji itself almost ominously, with a lightning bolt in the foreground and surrounded by clouds....almost as if Fuji is itself a monster bringing the storm with it. A sort of kaiju, maybe?

Ukiyo-e was a style that had been used mostly for portraits of actors and courtesans, but Hokusai broadened it to include landscape painting, with huge success. Ukiyo-e is now not only a popular art form worldwide, but it's also been a huge influence on Western art, particularly the Impressionists, who often imitated its style in their own ways.

From the Art Institute of Chicago.

Easter present for the kid: new case for the #Nintendo #DSlite. The old case had a broken hinge, plus the new one has a nice #Hokusai Kanagawa wave print (which the kid loves).
Fiddly business replacing the case on these! The tiny springs on the shoulder buttons really tested my patience! 😅

Lessons on How to Draw by Hokusai via Kottke [Shared]

In 1812, Japanese woodblock print artist Katsushika Hokusai, who would later become famous for his iconic Great Wave off Kanagawa prints, published a three-volume series called Quick Lessons in Simplified Drawing. All three volumes are available online: one, two, three. Even if you’re not in the market for drawing lessons, the pages are wonderful to flip through.
