From #Himalaya to #Arctic - #GlaciersAtRisk: A Wake-Up Call on #WorldWaterDay

Story by Namrata Dadwal, March 21, 2025

"This year on World Water Day on March 22, the UN is highlighting '#GlacierPreservation'. Why? Because these frozen reservoirs that supply freshwater to nearly two billion people are disappearing at an alarming rate due to #ClimateChange.

"According to the #Copernicus Climate Change Service (#C3S), Earth's #glaciers have lost over 8,200 gigatonnes of ice since 1976, leading to #RisingSeaLevels and #WaterScarcity concerns. Nearly 6,000 gigatonnes were lost between 2000 and 2023, with the 2010s being the worst decade on record for glaciers almost the annual ice loss was more than double that of the 1980s, with an average of 370 gigatonnes of ice vanishing each year."

Mountain climbers often succumb to altitude sickness — the body's reaction to a significant drop in atmospheric pressure, which means less oxygen is taken in with each breath. Yet, in high altitudes on the Tibetan Plateau, where oxygen levels in the air people breathe are notably lower than lower altitudes, human communities thrive. @ScienceAlert tells us how:

‘Catastrophic’ 2023 lake outburst in India driven by glacial melt and permafrost thaw

#ClimateChange played a key role in the “catastrophic” 2023 floods in the Himalayan state of Sikkim in #India, a new study says.
The breach of one of the “largest, fastest-growing and most hazardous” glacial lakes in Sikkim, the South #Lhonak lake, led to cascading floods that killed 55 people and washed away a 1,200 megawatt (MW) #hydropower dam.
The event was identified as a glacial lake outburst flood (#GLOF), which is a sudden release of water from a lake fed by glacial melt.
#Sikkim is a small Himalayan state in north-east India, bordering #China in the north, #Bhutan in the east, #Nepal in the west and the state of West #Bengal in the south.
Part of the eastern #Himalaya, Sikkim is host to more than 90 #glaciers and #Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak. Sikkim serves as the origin and upper river basin for the #Teesta river, one of the largest tributaries of the #Brahmaputra river system.

An international research team has concluded that the Sikkim flood disaster in the Himalayas in October 2023 was caused by some 14.7 million cubic meters of frozen moraine material collapsing into South Lhonak Lake, triggering a 20-meter flood wave. The event is a striking example of the increasing dangers of climate change in high mountain regions

Thorung La High Camp, Nepal, 4,880m.🇳🇵🏔️🥾

I took this photo around 5:15 AM. You can see the hikers preparing to climb Thorung La Pass, which rises to 5,416m. Some, like me, already have an hour of walking behind them. Those who set off earlier had to climb the 500 meters of elevation that separate this camp from Thorung Phedi. Reaching this high-perched shelter marks the first real break.

Some fellow trekkers I met the day before spent the night here. We reunite, excited, around one of the large wooden tables in the dining hall. One last black tea to fight off the biting cold. Outside, it’s -15°C.

I still have 2 hours and 45 minutes of walking ahead before reaching this long-imagined place. After five months of traveling through Asia and twelve days of climbing, here I am, standing at the foot of this final challenge. The thin air is noticeable, making the moment even more precious. In truth, the ascent will be exhilarating, and the Himalayan landscape, dizzyingly beautiful.
