Midway through #Edmonton's 2021 #heatdome, I acquired a classroom set of thermometers and taped them throughout my unit.

I soon found out where the hottest areas are, how much difference there was between an unblocked vs blocked window for room vs ambient outdoor #temperature, etc.

And yeah, turning on lamps pretty consistently added ~1°C in the room.

Since the 2021 #heatdome hit and I had to make effective window blocks that I could physically manage to install and remove on my own, as-needed, I have needed to deal with the #light issue.

I don't like artificial lights (some can even trigger #Lupus symptoms, ugh 😱) and running them adds to the heat inside my unit.

And yes, I've measured.

Some locations are more prone to climate disasters than others, tho.

But what happens in those locations doesn't stay there. The societies as a whole and nature will suffer from these climate disasters.
And as such, no one, and even nowhere is save.

#Flood
*A cloud that has to climb up a mountain dumps its water before.
*A narrow valley with or without a river.
*riversides
*sea coasts

#Hail
* ...eg, Mexico city and the lower Alpine regions in Europe, also a small band in Germany from the West to the East, dunno why there.

#Tornado
* the US, where tornado bands are now moving away from traditional locations

#Heat , #heatwave and #heatdome
* cities
* Europe due to jetstream around #AMOC 's Cold Blob
* Pakistan, India, SouthEast Asia due to I don't really know

#drought
* forest-less areas
* cities like Berlin where river Spree in summer 2018 brought 18% less water than usual due to evaporation in AND along the Spree >150km upriver sciencedirect.com/science/arti
* locations now more prone to weather blocking, keeping Lows and Highs in place for longer due to slower #jetstream. = Europe, parts of the US, Canada and so on. Also pertains to #flooding .

#Cold outbreaks
As long as the AMOC doesn't collapse, the winter polar vortex is going to break up more often due to more #Arctic heat even in midwinter. Locations prone to cold outbreaks will see an increase when the jetstream laps South. Like for instance along the Rockies down to Texas, along the Ural mountains and Scandinavia.

Jeff Berardelli posted an explanation for Tuesday's torrential rain in Spain. A blocking kept the low in place and dump all the water in one place.

"Once again Europe has found itself a victim of severe blocking, resulting in 13” of rain in just 4 hours with devastating flooding!
Below you can see the storm cut off from steering stuck in between blocking in all directions."

13 inches in 4 hours = 355mm of rain...

Good morning from #Pasadena. So far our low is 25°c (77°F). Only just shut off AC. We ran it all night due to #HeatDome! Yesterday was 44°c (111°F.). Looks like more of the same today. Had better get moving!! It won’t be “cool” for long. Vid: Moses doing participating in canine petiole shredding Olympics!! 👍🏻

"Thanks to an extensive #HeatDome dominating much of [#Europe] as September starts, the #heatwave is nowhere near its end.

Sunday, September 1st, was already an astonishing record-breaking day.
This weather pattern will continue to dominate over the first week of September and establish a large Omega-blocking pattern across the continent."

PNNL: Creating a Cool Room for Extreme Heat Events

"Given the reality of global climate change and the increasing likelihood of extreme heat events, designing and retrofitting homes for resistance to extreme heat and power outages should be considered in all climates. Extending the "hours of safety" that a home can provide when air-conditioning is not available can be life-saving. However, it is not necessary for an entire home to be resistant to extreme heat. Instead, the design or retrofit can concentrate on just one room."

People with Disabilities and Extreme Heat
"Deaths of People with Disabilities Surge in Spain, As Does the Heat" – Human Rights Watch

People with physical and invisible disabilities are affected by heat in many different ways. Extreme heat in Spain, has taken the lives of approximately 1200 people since mid-July. The number of which are disabled, is unclear, but during the 2021 "heat dome" in British Columbia, Canada, 91% of those who died were disabled or chronically ill. I know heat certainly affects me. How does it affect you in relation to your disabilities?

The "Human Rights Watch" article linked below, reports on "the serious physical and mental health consequences heat has for people with disabilities". During their study of disabled residents of Andalusia, they found issues including: "gaps in public responses to protect the disabled... A lack of outreach services… and lack of data" about people with disabilities.

The "HRW" also cites a "LACK OF PARTICIPATION OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES IN SHAPING RESPONSES". People's hesitance to share disability related info for statistics is understandable, but advocacy and activism from the community is a key part in bringing change. Stand up, speak out and unite for disability rights and climate change. #DisabilitySolidarity
