Cecelia
I remember the first time I listened to stereo music with earphones. It was a somewhat magical experience with my young ears at the time. FM radio was filled with the novel experience.

Over the years, I’ve stopped noticing that stereo separation as much. Has modern music moved away from widely diverging stereo tracks or have I just not noticed while spending the last several years with one ear having less hearing?

I’m currently listening to a Superman track with both my ears working the same for now, and it’s maybe a little thrilling to feel like I’m in the music.

#StereoMusic #Aging #Music #HearingLoss

Fishercat
The Cognitive Load of Hearing Loss

My hearing has been getting noticeably worse over the past 10 years. Something clicked when I learned that hearing loss increases cognitive load.

When I can't hear all the sounds in speech, my brain pattern matches, as brains do, to fill in the blanks. The cognitive load from needing to fill in the blanks has increased as my hearing has deteriorated.

There's also socially navigating the issue. Every time I have trouble hearing what someone's saying, there are split-second decisions to make about what to do:

* Indicate I couldn't hear, and:
- decline repetition

- request repetition
- by repeating what I did hear
- vocalize missed sound placeholders, Y/N
- if yes, how

- without repeating what I heard
- listen closely & try to process everything
- be frustrated by repetition of what I did hear

- if repetition fails, decision queue restarts until I understand, or
- tire of trying repeated attempts to to process the same information, decline further attempts and try to move on with the conversation

* Pretend I heard/processed
- Nod and smile
- Make noncommittal social noises

I have to choose among those options *every single time* I didn't accurately hear and process what someone said. I also have to deal with my own and conversation partners' frustration with needing multiple attempts before I'm able to process what they're trying to tell me.

I am REALLY looking forward to getting my hearing aids.

#HearingLoss #MentalHealth #SocialSkills #Burnout

Closed all my fitness rings today and got my 10,000 steps in even though we spent a couple hours at the audiologist.
3. Hubs placed the order for resistance bands and a Sunny Health and Fitness smart twist stepper. Gary @N8DMT
Experimented with measuring frequency response of some generic Over The Counter (OTC) hearing aids. Product had three programs with subtle differences between them and wanted to select best response curve for needy family member. Used Digilent AD3, ext breadboard, a few parts from ADALP-2000 parts kit, and some blue tape to make crude response curve measurements. Now know that Program 1 is best for this user.
