Child CoVid Triggers Later Chronic Heart, Kidney, and Gastrointestinal Disease. This from a series of University of Pennsylvania studies. #CoVid #cardiovascular #renal #gastrointestinal #children #pediatrics

InstagramHoward G. Smith MD, AM on Instagram: "Child CoVid Triggers Chronic Heart, Kidney, and Gastrointestinal Disease Infection with the CoVid virus is associated with a 63% higher risk of cardiovascular disease, up to a 35% risk of chronic kidney disease, and a 28% risk of gastrointestinal problems. This from a series of University of Pennsylvania epidemiological studies reviewing the case histories of those with continuing issues following cases of youth CoVid. Studying more than 1.2 million pediatric patients with or without congenital heart disease, the data revealed that almost 2 of every 3 who suffered a CoVid infection developed arrhythmias, heart inflammation, chest pain, palpitations, and/or hypertension. The review of 1.9 million patients showed that more than one in 3 young CoVid patients developed mild to severe kidney damage impacting function from 1 to 24 months following their infections. Finally, the studies of more than 1.5 million children showed that 1 in 4 developed abdominal pain, diarrhea, and/or irritable bowel syndrome between 6 months and 2 years following their CoVid infections. The studies also revealed ethnic differences with the risk of post-CoVid complications higher in Asian American Pacific Islander children and adolescents. These results indicate the need for careful medical surveillance of children following CoVid infections. Their medical teams should, over the first 2 years, monitor their cardiac, renal, and, gastrointestinal functions. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2832549 https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2830031 https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-025-56284-0 https://www.pennmedicine.org/news/news-releases/2025/april/children-face-elevated-health-risks-for-years-after-CoVid #CoVid #cardiovascular #renal #gastrointestinal #children #pediatrics"0 likes, 0 comments - drhowardsmithreports on May 1, 2025: "Child CoVid Triggers Chronic Heart, Kidney, and Gastrointestinal Disease Infection with the CoVid virus is associated with a 63% higher risk of cardiovascular disease, up to a 35% risk of chronic kidney disease, and a 28% risk of gastrointestinal problems. Report from the air travel front in the US:
Here in Phoenix, everyone seems to be sick with a #respiratory and/or #gastrointestinal disease. No one has a #mask on (except me and spouse). Is it #flu? #COVID #birdflu ? No way to know. For now, it is business as usual, but I forecast more trouble ahead.

Oh, and flight attendants no longer refer to them as “masks”. They are “face coverings.” Since this is related to wearing an oxygen mask in case of emergency, it is true that veils, balaclavas and sacks over your head would also hinder the oxygen mask so “facing covering” would be sufficiently specific. But it still sounded weird.

#Contamination warnings issued for 5 #MaineBeaches heading into Labor Day weekend

John Terhune, Portland Press Herald, Maine
September 1, 2023

"Contaminated waters could hinder #beach adventures from York to Camden this Labor Day weekend.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has issued contamination warnings for five Maine beaches after finding elevated levels of #fecalbacteria.

"The affected beaches are #WillardBeach in #SouthPortland, #GooseRocksBeach in #Kennebunkport, #GoochsBeach in #Kennebunk, #CapeNeddickBeach in #YorkMaine and #LaiteBeach in #CamdenMaine. Total beach closures are rare in Maine, and as of Friday night all five affected beaches remained open.

"The presence of enterococci bacteria suggests water also may contain other harmful bacteria, #viruses or #parasites, according to the DEP's Maine Healthy Beaches program, which tracks water quality at public beaches from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Contact with contaminated water can cause flu-like symptoms, #gastrointestinal issues, rashes and #infection.

"Beachgoers are advised to avoid areas with contamination warnings.

"Laite Beach in Camden, which had more than 26 times more fecal bacteria than the threshold deemed safe, was the most contaminated beach on Friday night, according to DEP data."

When Digestive Symptoms Signal Parkinson's Disease
The fact that nearly all patients with Parkinson's disease experience digestive problems and have neuropathological lesions in intrinsic and extrinsic innervation of the gastrointestinal tract suggests that Parkinson's disease also has a gastrointestinal component.

The "consider using an N95 in the public washroom" thread.

In which we discuss that coronaviruses are famously gastrointestinal as well as respiratory. It's the same entry point right?

--

I have been thinking about this long and hard and by that I mean 5 seconds and I have concluded that bathroom fans should not be able to be turned off ever again.

Too much virus in the bathroom I bet

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

2/2 #HandHygiene #HandWashing

It is important to note… "Use of #antibacterial soap showed little added benefit compared with use of nonantibacterial #soap."

Take home: There is NO need to add antibacterial agents to soap for basic #InfectionControl at home or in public places. More important that that you "just DO it" [wash your hands] than choosing a brand/formula of soap.

…and...

"Hand hygiene is clearly effective against #gastrointestinal and, to a lesser extent, #respiratory infections."

Take home: This makes sense! #GI #infections are typically "fecal/oral" (I don't have to go into what that means!). The hands are the most likely route of infection. Wash them!

#Influenza can be transmitted by touching surfaces. #COVID19 less so. So again the above makes sense.

Hope this Helps!
