#Fort #Bliss, the huge US army base at the Texas-Mexico border is poised to become a
#deportation #hub under plans proposed by the Trump administration
– prompting an outcry from critics as it once again becomes a focal point in the immigration debate.

Situated in the heart of El Paso,
the base has already been used by Donald Trump since he returned to the White House to fly deportees on military aircraft to Guantánamo Bay and Central and South America
amid intense publicity around his wider anti-immigration agenda.
Now it is reportedly being considered for large-scale detention as well as expulsion purposes.
Opponents of any such plan disapprove of the effect it would have on the armed forces
and also condemned it as treating migrants as if they are “reality TV”.

During the 19th century building of the so called #Brialmont #fortifications around the city of #Antwerp. Technology evolved rapidly, however, and by the time they were ready they were already outdated. Built entirely of bricks they only had a limited adequacy during the Great War. Still, because of them, it took longer than anticipated for the Germans to occupy Antwerp.

Fort 8 is the best preserved and is accessible.

A circle with a solid brick wall to the left which arches to arching niches to the right (4 of them can be seen.) Every niche has a small window. Everything built out of red bricks, even the floor. The bricks on the floor are worn (but generally in good condition,) everything else is well preserved.

Since learning about this #fort (Castillo) when I was a college student, it became my favorite in the western hemisphere. The way that it rises from the rock with its imposing walls, dry moats, and firing positions in all directions always stood out to me.

The harbor of #havana was also full of people fishing both from shore and from boats, some of which were homemade using blocks to old styrofoam. In some cases, we even saw people spear fishing.
